How To Add Friends in Apex Legends
Apex Legends is a team game and while you can play solo, some things are better with friends. This is one of those things. You can play with random teams or load up with two friends to hit the ground running. This tutorial will show you how to add friends to a match in Apex Legends and how to be a good teammate in the game.
The team aspect is one of the major features of Apex Legends that makes it different from other battle royale games. PUBG and Fortnite are both solo and while you can team up with others, there isn’t an integral team aspect like there is here. You load a game and if you aren’t with two friends you will be automatically teamed with two strangers to play.
In many games, teaming up with randoms never ends well but for some reason it works fine in Apex Legends. The ping system helps a lot but there is also a light level of responsibility for teamplay in the game. You know you don’t have to play as a team but you also know you will survive for much longer if you do. That means you often actively contribute to teamplay even if that’s not normally your thing.
Adding friends in Apex Legends
Adding friends in Apex Legends has two stages. You first add your friends to the Origin launcher so you can see when they are online and then you can add them to your next match.
To add friends to the Origin launcher:
- Open the Origin launcher and select the Friends menu at the top.
- Select Add a friend and enter their username, name or email address in the box.
- Hit Search and then Add as a friend once they have been located.
Friends added here will be able to play any game you both own and not just Apex Legends.
To add friends to Apex Legends:
- Open the game and select the small Friends icon in the bottom right of the screen.
- Select a friend from those in the list or add Steam friends if they aren’t already in Origin.
- Select the friends and then either invite to party or join their party.
Successfully adding friends should have them appear beside you in the game lobby. If they don’t for some reason, hit the ‘+’ icon either side of your character to manually add them. You can then hit Ready when you’re all set and ready to play.
I don’t have a PS4 but presumably the setup is largely the same as using the Origin launcher but you have the option of using the PSN ID as well as email.
Playing with friends in Apex Legends
If you’re new to Apex Legends, there are a couple of important things you should know about teamplay in Apex Legends. It’s a loose team that cooperates when things get loud but are often happy to split off to loot separately. By using the ping system, you can alert your team to good loot, incoming enemies and tell them where to go next.
Ping is vital to your team’s survival and plays a pivotal role in how well you do in the match.
When playing Apex Legends, you should ping all blue and purple loot you’re not keeping, ping any enemy you see, any containers and any desired direction of travel. If you need something, ping it in your inventory to alert your teammates to your requirements. Hit the ping button on a gun to request ammo, hit a medkit to request more medkits, ping an empty attachment or armor space to request either of those and so on.
Try to keep pings relevant and only use it when it’s important but make sure to use it.
Teamplay in Apex Legends means three sets of eyes, three guns and two opportunities to revive. If you get into a firefight, don’t charge in with your SMG blazing. Look at who is firing at whom and look for flanking opportunities or where your character’s special ability could secure the win.
This will all come in time, but teamplay is a central part of Apex Legends so is more important here than in many other games. Yes this is a shooter but it’s also battle royale and some of the players you will come up against are seriously good. If you can play as a team and coordinate your attacks, you’ll be champions in no time!
