How To Add Instagram Stories to your Profile Page
One of the cool things about Instagram Stories is that they are temporary glimpses into people’s lives. There is a freedom in knowing that you’re letting people into your life and then that moment will be gone forever. But what if you don’t want it to disappear after 24 hours? Then you add those Instagram stories to your profile page.
More precisely, you turn those Instagram stories to Highlights. Instagram Stories Highlights is a very useful feature for keeping things around for longer than a day. I use these a lot with social media marketing as they are ideal for small businesses to highlight features, special offers and all that good stuff. Normal users can make them too.
Instagram Stories Highlights
Instagram Stories Highlights are created by using the archive feature. You can collect Stories and parts of stories from your Stories Archive to create something longer lasting. Once complete, these Highlights will live on your profile page and won’t have the same 24 hour lifespan of a normal Story.
You can move them around and delete them at any time so your profile page doesn’t always look the same but if you want people to see something specific for longer than usual, this is the way to do it.
How to create Instagram Stories Highlights
To use Instagram Stories Highlights, you will need to use the archive feature of the app. Until you enable this feature, there will be nothing in your archive to create a Highlight. Once enabled, you will have to wait a while for the archive to populate before you can create something from it.
- Select the three line menu icon from your profile page.
- Select Privacy and Security, then Story Controls.
- Toggle Save to Archive to on.
The archive is similar to Snapchat Memories and once enabled, will automatically save all your Stories to the cloud. You will need these to begin creating Highlights. To view your archive, look for the clock icon in the top left of your profile page and select it.
Once you have some Stories in your archive, we can use them to create a Highlight.
- Select the arrow next to Story Highlights on your profile page and select New.
- Select any of the Stories in your archive you want to include in a Highlight.
- Select a title and cover image for your Highlight.
- Select Add to publish your Highlight.
You can select complete Stories, scenes, pages or just a snippet of any story to add to your highlight. At Step 3, you can select Edit Cover to create a new image for the Highlight. If you’re a business, it is advisable to brand it something unique from the original Story. You can upload a brand new image or use an existing one for the cover but it is recommended to use a unique image to make the Highlight stand out more.
If you’re a home user, you can do what you like and use whatever image you like.
Once published, the Highlight will appear on your Instagram profile page and will remain there until you delete or replace it.
Use your current Story as a Highlight
While Instagram Stories Highlights use archived Stories, you can also use your current Story too if you like. The process is much the same as above but is useful in those early days if you have just switched on your archive feature and there isn’t much in it yet.
- Open your Story from your profile and select Highlight at the bottom.
- Select New or add to an existing Highlight as you need.
- Give your new Highlight a name and select Add.
The only downside to using a current Story is that you cannot use a unique image. If you’re marketing a business or product, you will have to use the image already on the Story. It’s only for 24 hours though. You can always revisit the Highlight after the original story has expired and change the image if you want to keep it original.
Instagram Stories Highlights is a neat feature that lets you keep certain Stories for longer than 24 hours. It is most useful for businesses or marketers wanting to highlight products, special offers and other services for longer than a day but home users can use it to keep treasured memories, special events or something important too.
