Right off the bat, we should make a distinction between two things – Amazon Instant Videos and Amazon Gift Cards. The former refers to video streaming service which was previously named Amazon On Demand. The latter is the Amazon gift card option you can send to someone.
So, the Amazon Instant Video Gift Card would be a credit to purchase and stream one of the Amazon videos, but it’s not like that. You cannot just use any gift card or gift card balance to purchase Amazon subscription services. Keep on reading to find out more.
Basic Amazon Gift Cards
As you might already know, Amazon goes the extra mile to streamline and embellish the gift options. Go to the gift card page and you’ll see a bunch of features that can help you zero in on the card for your occasion. Plus, there are three types of cards to choose from – eGift, Print at Home, and Mail.
This is the electronic version of the real gift card. As such, it is one for the most popular options and can be used for a variety of Amazon items. Plus, the customization and sending is a real no-brainer.
Print at Home
The name is pretty self-explanatory. You design the gift card on the Amazon website, get the PDF file, then print and fold it yourself. This is great if you wish to hand-deliver the card and don’t mind the extra work. Like all of them, it can be easily redeemed and used for a number of Amazon products and services.
Why bother with printing and folding, and all? Amazon can do everything for you and have the card delivered to the recipient’s doorstep. Needless to say, the physical card selection is hard to rival. For example, the diamond plate tin is our favorite, what’s yours?
However, none of these would be of any help if you wish to gift someone an Amazon Prime membership. But there are a few things you can do about it.
The Silver Lining
Amazon gift cards can be used for digital downloads. To be exact, you can download Amazon Videos, Kindle books, and Amazon music with them. And there are two ways to take advantage of the card.
The easy thing to do is redeem the card into your account, then use the credit to make purchases. Alternatively, you can select the “Redeem a gift card or promotion code” before you hit the “Buy now” button. Either way, this gives you some access to the digital content but not the subscription services.
Amazon Instant Video – What Is It?
This is the credit/subscription service that’s used for Amazon videos. As said, Instant Video is the former On Demand and it gives you the options to stream or download on multiple devices.
At the time of this writing, this is only available in the U.S. In other words, you’ll need the U.S. credit card and IP address to make the purchase. So, how does it all work?
First, you need to sign up/register for the service and supply the necessary information to qualify for it. Since the service is only available in the U.S. there are some third-party websites that claim to help you use Amazon Instant Video Card internationally.
However, we advise you to steer clear from these offers. They might take your money for nothing and Amazon is bound to bust the fake account quickly.
Buy the subscription plan and you are now eligible to stream and download your favorite content.
Prime Membership Gifts
A good alternative to a genuine Amazon Instant Video Gift Cards are the Gifts of Prime. You can get one for yourself or send it to someone. The steps differ a bit, but here is what you need to do.
Sending Gift of Prime to Someone or Yourself
Navigate to Gift of Prime on Amazon website and choose one of the options – 12 or 3 months. Move onto the checkout page and provide your email address. It should be typed into the “Recipient’s email” section and this is where the step differs if you want to send the gift or receive it yourself.
To get it for you, enter the email that’s associated with your Prime account. Otherwise, type the email of the special person you want to get the card. Proceed to customize the message, choose the gift card balance, and then hit Continue.
After you inspect the order and make sure it’s all okay, click “Place your order” to finish up. You, or the recipient, will get the confirmation/gift card email. At this point, you need to follow the instructions from the email to redeem the gift card.
Note: If you are on a trial membership, you need to end it before becoming eligible to redeem the gift card.
Who’s Got the Theater Tickets?
One might expect that Amazon would offer one option that acts like a master gift card. But until that time you need to make do with what you got.
