Whoever said “A bad worker blames his tools” has never tried to kill an enemy in Apex Legends with the wrong gun. Managing your inventory, and making sure that you have the right gear, is a vital part of Battle Royale games, and Apex Legends is a prime example.

How to Open Inventory in Apex Legends on Xbox One

Similar to MMOs, there are several tiers of loot you can find, from weapon attachments to armor, and you’ll be coming across plenty of ammo types that don’t fit the guns you are currently packing. Being smart about how you pick what you keep is one of the things that make a difference between a good Apex player and a great one.

How to Access Your Inventory

It is easy to open up your inventory and see what you have and what you might want to get rid of on Xbox One. You just need to press the Menu button and you’re in your inventory screen.

Once you’re in your inventory screen, you can manage your loot. If any of your acquired gear has a red circle with a line over it, that means that it can’t be used with your current weapons, and you should probably chuck it.

Dropping Unwanted Gear

If you’ve picked up some attachments or ammo that you don’t need after all, you should probably get rid of it to free up your limited inventory space for something more useful. Also, as Apex Legends is by design a team-based game, there’s a pretty good chance that the stuff that isn’t useful to you might well be useful to one of your teammates.

To drop any of the items that you don’t want to hang onto, highlight it in your inventory, and then press the A button on the controller. This will throw the unwanted item down in front of you. Remember that it might be of use to one of your friends, so you might want to ping it so they can grab it for themselves. Just because you’ve got more than enough med-kits, doesn’t mean the rest of your team does.

Plus, you should keep in mind that if you’re dropping the item in a high traffic area, you might end up supplying your enemies with something that they can turn against you. Dropping a load of grenades that you don’t want, only to be blown up by them a minute later, is hardly a satisfying end. Try dropping them out of sight, hidden away somewhere that won’t be obvious to passers-by.

Picking What to Keep and What to Lose

As the round progresses, you’ll get your hands on better weapons, armor, and accessories. Making sure you’ve got the best possible combination out of what you find is an important part of the game. Therefore, you need to know how to judge at a glance what you want to keep on you.

That’s why they have the color-coding system for the tiers of loot. Grey loot is the basic, common gear. Blue is rare, and so better than grey. Purple is epic, and generally the best of what you’ll find. If fortune favors you, you might find some legendary Gold loot. Generally speaking, you’ll want to swap out any lower tier items that you have for better stuff.

Make sure that what you’re keeping works with your gear, though. You don’t want to make a snap decision to keep an epic attachment, only to discover after you’ve moved on that it doesn’t actually fit any of the guns you’re running with.

I Went to King’s Canyon, and All I Got Was This Lousy Grey Gun

Having the best available gear is a vital part of getting the edge over your opponents, and getting it is one of the most enjoyable parts of Battle Royale games. Keep your eyes out for opportunities for great loot, like shooting down Flyers or in the middle of Leviathans’ footprints. Just don’t get caught unawares while sorting out your inventory. Dying in the menus is an ignoble end.
