The next major version of Apple’s desktop operating system, OS X 10.10 Yosemite, launches today. The company just made the announcement during its live event in Cupertino. Continuing the theme from last year, OS X Yosemite is free for all users with compatible Macs, which includes:

  • iMac (Mid 2007 or later)
  • MacBook (13-inch Aluminum, Late 2008), (13-inch, Early 2009 or later)
  • MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid-2009 or later), (15-inch, Mid/Late 2007 or later), (17-inch, Late 2007 or later)
  • MacBook Air (Late 2008 or later)
  • Mac Mini (Early 2009 or later)
  • Mac Pro (Early 2008 or later)
  • Xserve (Early 2009)

Apple doesn’t update its online stores during its live events, but the Mac App Store should be updated shortly after today’s event. Users will be able to access and download Yosemite from the store at that time. It will likely be featured as a top download for several weeks.
