Aspyr Bringing Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic to iPad?
One of the most beloved Star Wars games ever may be about to make its debut on the iPad, according to a leaked line of text sent to customers by Mac game publisher Aspyr. As reported by IGN, a newsletter sent to Aspyr’s customers Tuesday accidentally included a line of text announcing, without further explanation, that “the critically-acclaimed Star Wars RPG is now available on iPad.”
Many speculate that the teasing line of text refers to Knights of the Old Republic, the Star Wars role-playing game developed by BioWare. Originally released on Windows and Xbox in 2003, Aspyr ported the game to OS X in 2004, and later brought it to the Mac App Store in 2011.
The game’s story takes place 4,000 years before the setting of the original film trilogy and focuses on the player’s attempt to stop a rogue ex-Jedi from destroying the Galactic Republic. The game received universal praise upon its release, and has a Metacritic rating of 93 out of 100.
The game received a sequel, Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords in 2005 and its setting inspired the recent online role-playing game The Old Republic, which launched in 2011. Unfortunately for Mac owners, neither title is currently available for OS X.
Aspyr has not confirmed the leaked reference to Knights of the Old Republic, nor has any additional information appeared since the email was sent. However, the company’s previous work with Star Wars games and recent release of iOS games gives fans of the franchise hope that one of the most popular Star Wars titles will soon be playable anywhere on the iPad. As MacRumors forum poster daverso put it: “This will make bathroom breaks unhealthily long…”
