So, if a big update pops up, you should accept it and take some time to update the system. New updates mean improved features and add-ons that can make your gaming adventures more enjoyable.

Without further ado, let’s see how you can update Xbox games and apps.

Updating Your Xbox One Gaming Console

Update Xbox One Games

Generally speaking, there are two types of updates that you can perform on your Xbox One console. The first type is manual, while the second one is automatic.

Both of these updates have their pros and cons so let’s explain them further.

How to Automatically Update Your Xbox One Software?

In case you don’t want to waste time checking for updates, the system can do this for you. In other words, once you set up your Xbox One for automatic software updates, you will always have the newest versions of the games and apps on your console while not having to lift a finger.

Here is how you can do that:

  1. Open the Guide by pressing the Xbox button
  2. Navigate to the Gear icon
  3. Select System
  4. Select Settings (in some versions, you can skip this step)
  5. Select the option labeled “Console info & updates” or “Updates” (depending on your system)

From there, you will be able to see exactly which updates are available for you to download. In both the Console and Games & Apps tabs, you will find the Keep My Console Up to Date checkbox. Simply check both checkboxes and your work is done.

By doing this, your whole system will automatically update in the background while your Xbox One console is turned off. This will eliminate any waiting time when you want to play a game that has received an update since the last time you played it.

Since you have checked both checkboxes, your entire software will automatically update itself, not just your games.

If you only want to update your games, just check the second checkbox in the Games & Apps section. The first one should be left unchecked.

Automatic updates are excellent for obvious reasons, but the downside is that you lose control of your console’s memory. Everything happens in the background and the console doesn’t ask for your permission to keep downloading and installing updates.

That means you need to keep track of how much memory you have left. If you run out, you’ll start noticing problems.

How to Manually Update Your Xbox One Software?

You can update your entire software by doing everything manually. Here is how you can do that in just a few simple steps:

  1. Access the Guide by pressing the Xbox button
  2. Navigate to the Gear icon
  3. Select System
  4. Choose Settings (some versions don’t have this option so just skip to the next step)
  5. Click on “Updates” or “Console info & updates”

After that, you will be able to see all of the updates on the left side of the screen. To update your game, simply go through all of the available updates and click on the one that’s meant for your game. This will only update the specific game or app that you have selected.

Of course, if you want to update your entire Xbox One software, you will have to go through all available updates and update them manually, one by one.

By clicking on Latest Console Update Status, you will be prompted with the date when you last updated your software and other additional information regarding your Updates setup.

It goes without saying that this method requires more work for updating your games and apps, but it gives you complete control over your console’s memory. You can choose exactly what you want to download and when you want to do it. For some users, this is easier to work with than the automatic update method.

Which Method Should You Choose?

This depends entirely on you. Both methods have clear advantages and disadvantages, so decide what you want to do based on your preferences and habits.

You can always change the update method that you are currently on. For example, you can allow your system to update everything at the end of each month, when lots of new updates become available. Then uncheck the automatic update feature and download anything you need manually.
