If you’re old enough to remember 56k then you may also remember utilizing download managers to speed up file downloads over those archaic and slow connections. While analog may have gone the way of the Dodo, download managers are still around but they now perform a different function. Here are some of what I think are the best Chrome download managers around.

Modern download managers now help manage large downloads, multiple files, check for corruption and resume paused or interrupted downloads. That last function alone makes using a download manager inside your browser worth considering. What could be more frustrating than downloading a 5GB file only for it to get interrupted halfway through? At least with some of these extensions you have the option to resume.
Chrome download managers
Each of the Chrome download managers in this list work as extensions within the browser. All are currently working at the time of publishing.
Chrono Download Manager
Chrono Download Manager is very good at what it does. It not only allows you to manage all downloads from within it, it can also help you order downloads and automatically route different downloads to different folders. It can also resume a paused or failed download just by hitting the replay button within it.
Chrono Download Manager also makes it easy to manage downloads, so if you have a bit of a hoarding habit, you can easily track everything from within the extension.
Free Download Manager
As the name suggests, this Free Download Manager for Chrome helps manage downloads. It is fast, simple to use and very effective but needs the Free Download Manager app to work properly. Despite this, once you have both working, downloading any type of file from anywhere is easier to manage.
While the description says it speeds up downloads, I did not experience any speed increase when using it. Despite this it is a solid extension worthy of your time and support.
Download Ninja is a great Chrome download manager. It’s fast, simple and free and helps manage all your files with ease. It occasionally has hiccups in Windows 10 but once you reload it, seems to work fine once more. Downloads are simple to manage and once you point the download to Download Ninja, everything just works.
Like Free Download Manager, Download Ninja has an app and a Chrome extension that you need to use to get the best out of it.
Internet Download Manager For Chrome
The descriptively titled Internet Download Manager For Chrome does exactly what it says on the tin. It is an extensions that works alongside the well-known Internet Download Manager (IDM) app and you need both for this to work. The extension works well and integrates easily, allowing you to download anything from anywhere.
The extension does force you to review it to continue using it but aside from that is seamless and simple to use.
This download manager isn’t quite as good as Chrono Download Manager or IDM but is still useful if you don’t want to use either of those.
Video Downloader Professional
Video Downloader Professional is useful if you have a bit of a YouTube habit. You can quickly download videos from almost any hosting site to your hard drive and watch them even when you don’t have an internet connection. The extension is simple and just adds a little green download icon to the browser. Click it and download and the rest is history.
Video Downloader Professional works with a range of streaming services but I cannot comment as to its legality.
While ‘Master’ may be a little rich, Download Master is still pretty good. Like some of the others on here, it requires the Download Master app to also be installed on your computer to interface correctly. As far as I can tell, both are bug and malware free and work quite well.
The first language of Download Master is Russian to make sure you change the language at the install stage otherwise you will quickly get lost!
These are what I consider to be the best Chrome download managers available right now. Chrono Download Manager is my go-to downloader because it doesn’t require an extra app but any of these can take care of business. Got any others to suggest? You know what to do.
