Best Day of Week to Buy Cheap Airline Tickets

You have probably already heard that Tuesday is the best day to find cheap airline tickets. This has been rumored and believed to be true for quite some time until one day, the rumors changed.

Nowadays, Sunday claims the title of the best day of the week to get tickets for your upcoming flight. This is quite strange as Sunday was once considered to be the worst day for booking tickets. So, what’s the truth and when should you actually look for airline tickets? Let’s dive in.

What’s the Best Day of the Week to Book a Flight?

According to a 2018 report, conducted by the Airlines Reporting Corporation (ARC) and Expedia, Sunday is indeed the best day to book a flight. As stated in the report, people are most likely going to find cheaper domestic and international economy class tickets on the last day of the week.

When it comes to the cheapest premium flights, Saturday and Sunday share the top spot.

However, this doesn’t necessarily always have to be true. For example, Sunday isn’t the cheapest option if you are flying internationally from countries like China, Thailand, Australia, and Iceland. This applies to domestic flights in all of the mentioned countries, as well.

That’s something that you should definitely keep in mind when planning your trip.

Should You Stop Checking for Tickets on Tuesdays?

Now, the question arises – should you stop checking for tickets on Tuesdays as it isn’t considered the cheapest day for booking anymore? The short answer is – of course not!

As we have already mentioned, there are no strict rules that proclaimed Sunday to be the cheapest day of the week for booking flights. Having said that, you should still check the ticket prices on Tuesday.

Actually, this doesn’t only apply to Sundays and Tuesdays. You should check the prices regardless of the day of the week. As you have seen, the “cheapest flight day” title seems to be shifting from day to day quite a lot. Thus, you shouldn’t rely on the Sunday/Tuesday ticket rule.

The Cheapest Day to Depart

Believe it or not, your departure date is actually more important than the day you have booked your ticket on.

According to Expedia’s 2018 research, the best day to leave is definitely Friday. They claim that everyone’s favorite day of the week is actually the cheapest day to fly on, no matter where you are going. Logically, their advice to travelers is to book tickets for planes that depart on Friday.

Expedia adds to this claim by saying that Fridays and Saturdays are the best days for flying in the premium class and that Thursdays and Fridays are the best days for flying internationally in the economy class.

As Expedia claims, this is because international and domestic premium ATPs are at their lowest during the weekends.

All of this would be great if it wasn’t for another study that has different claims. CheapAir.com has published their own 2018 study which says that Tuesdays and Wednesdays are the cheapest days to fly on.

They also claim that Sunday is the most expensive day to depart. if their calculations are to be believed, flying on Wednesdays instead of Sundays will save you around $76 per airplane ticket.

Who to Trust and What to Do?

After analyzing both reports and reading about different claims and different people’s experiences, we have come to the conclusion that the end of the week seems like the best day to book an airplane ticket.

Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays should be your go-to days for booking cheap tickets. You should also avoid flying out on weekends as that won’t be your cheapest option. It would be best if you could depart on Friday, and avoid Saturdays and Sundays at all costs.

Useful Tips for Finding Cheaper Flights

As promised, we have dedicated this section to give you some of the best tips for finding cheap flights.

TIP 1: Take the season of the year into consideration when booking a flight.

You should definitely think of the season that you are going to travel in as every season has its own rules.

According to CheapAir:

  1. If you are flying out in winter, you should book at least 62 days in advance.
  2. If you are flying out in spring, you should book at least 90 days in advance.
  3. If you are flying out in summer, you should book at least 47 days in advance.
  4. If you are flying out in fall, you should book at least 69 days in advance.

When it comes to the highest average airplane ticket prices, December and June seem to be the obvious winners. December is the most expensive month to fly in when it comes to international flights. June is the most expensive month for domestic flights.

When it comes to premium flights, October has been reported to have the highest international ATPs.

TIP 2: Use a VPN to find a better flight deal.

VPNs hide your computer’s IP address and make your location invisible to other servers.

With that in mind, if you are planning on having multiple international flights, you could save some money by buying tickets while being protected by VPN. This way, you could avoid US prices and buy tickets much cheaper.
