Movie theaters have all but been replaced with the rise of Smart Televisions. Why bother going out of the house when you can enjoy an equally cinematic experience from the comfort of your living room couch? Home entertainment has reached its peak in recent years, so many companies upped their game when it comes to TV sets.
You can now get a 4k Smart TV for a sensible retail price. Not only that, most devices have the latest technologies that ensure an impeccable viewing experience. All in all, figuring out what the best TVs for streaming are is quite the endeavor. Luckily, we managed to pick ten top-notch models that can accommodate different tastes and user needs. We’ve included some of the biggest industry names, such as Samsung and Sony, along with a few low-key TV sets that deserve more attention.
The Hisense H9G is one of the best TVs for streaming HDR content. It’s the whole package – outstanding picture quality in a sleek, modern design that elevates any setup. The device runs on Android TV, which is less intuitive than other smart platforms but far more customizable. Not to mention the endless library of games, TV shows, and movies that are available for streaming.
In terms of HDR, this is the absolute reigning champion. It has a huge color gamut for HDR material and a phenomenal contrast ratio, resulting in deep black tones ideal for late-night bingeing. The fantastic full-array local dimming option boosts the black contrast even further. Brightness levels can soar high enough to make highlights in HDR content pop. On top of that, it has all of the most common HDR formats covered.
Pro gamers will nag about the lackluster VRR support, but the 120Hz screen is more than enough for the average viewer. Moreover, it has a low input lag and an incredible response time, resulting in consistent motion in fast-moving material. Overall, this is one of the best HDR smart TVs we’ve tried, and most users should be happy with it.
The Hisense H8G is the H9G but on a tighter budget, which could be the deciding factor for some. It also has Android TV and a plethora of applications available for download from the Google Play Store. It works almost as well in dimly lit spaces as the H9G model.
The VA panel has an outstanding native contrast ratio, and the full-array local dimming option improves the black level. If you’re not that keen on the all-black design, the unit comes in other color schemes. In terms of brightness, it gets light enough to fight glare and has good reflection handling, which is useful if you choose to use it in a reasonably well-lit space. It supports the most widespread HDR formats, including Dolby Vision and HDR10+, and it provides a decent HDR experience thanks to its adequate brightness and broad color gamut.
If you’re on the hunt for an HDR-compatible smart TV with crisp images and stellar audio, this Sony model is your dream come true. Of course, it runs on Android TV, which has all of your favorite streaming games and more. Since it also has access to the Google Play Store, you can choose from thousands of applications to customize the TV’s features to your liking.
The TV also supports Chromecast and AirPlay 2, allowing you to cast content from your mobile or tablet directly to the TV. The remote control device has a button for quick access to Netflix and a microphone for voice search. Thanks to the Google Assistant service, you can even ask the TV questions and use it to power your smart gadgets.
When it comes to image and sound quality, the Sony Bravia A8H OLED is unmatched. There’s a lot to love about the new Sony OLED. The vibrant color, incredibly sharp detail, and the most recent edition of Android TV money could buy is enough to make you swoon.
The device delivers more than just a stunning 4K image, thanks to Sony’s amazing X Motion Clarity feature powered by the X1 Ultimate Picture Processor. This excellent image is balanced by Acoustic Surface Audio’s return, which provides even clearer audio than ever before – right from the phone. In terms of pure movie-watching results, the Sony Bravia A8H OLED established itself as the premium OLED TV category champion. It’s only marginally hampered by the absence of absolute HDMI 2.1 support and a slightly higher price than the market.
The LG NANO90 2020 is an excellent all-around TV from the fantastic NanoCell series. It has an IPS screen with relatively wide viewing angles but at the expense of a poor contrast ratio and mediocre black uniformity. It has a full-array local dimming option that increases contrast somewhat, but its overall efficiency is disappointing.
With the quick response time, low input lag, and 120Hz screen, not even the grouchiest gamers can complain. It also supports a variable refresh rate (VRR) to reduce screen tearing. The TV comes with a “Magic Remote” that monitors your arm motions while pointing at the screen, allowing you to make fast and easy choices. While it doesn’t get very bright, it has excellent reflection handling and should be fine in reasonably lit spaces. The device functions in combination with your Amazon Echo smart speaker, allowing you to toggle channels, pause, and scan for content using voice commands. It’s a fantastic HDR-compatible TV with plenty of ports, including four HDMI, three USB, and an eARC jack.
At the last CES, Samsung introduced their newest TV set – the Samsung QN90A. It comes with a slew of new features that brings home entertainment to a new level of excitement. Apart from the QLED technology, it has a brand-new mini-LED panel that perfects the image quality. Thanks to these additions, the TV has a large color gamut and contrast on par with OLED models. Also, the display can now produce individually lit pixels that capture even the smallest of textures.
Samsung QN90A has an upgraded processor with a neural network that provides upscaling for content that’s not 4k, which makes for a gorgeous, high-quality image. You’ll get a suite of preloaded applications with the Tizen operating system, including Prime Video, Netflix, and SamsungTV+. This means you’ll have access to live movies, news, and sports channels without having to pay for a cable or satellite subscription. Like other premium Samsung models, it has the OneConnect feature that ensures the apps run smoothly. Of course, it’s not all about the visuals – the latest SpaceFit Sound system is also included in the integrated speakers.
The setup works with eco sensors to create an immersive surround sound experience tailored to accommodate every room in your house. For hands-free access, the voice-enabled remote works with Alexa, Google Assistant, and Bixby. The QN90A has an elegant, ultra-modern design that will add a touch of elegance to your home theater. It comes in different sizes, so you’ll be sure to find a perfect fit for your room.
If you want to transform your basement into a home theater, you’ll need a TV that suits you. The Samsung Crystal UHD 85-inch television is made for big-screen entertainment. It comes with an upgraded Crystal 4K processor and the latest Tizen operating system, which uses HDR10+ technology. As a result, the 4K resolution and color are breathtaking.
You get access to all of your favorite movies and shows as well as next-generation content so you can keep up with pop culture trends. Also, the TV has a V-Chip that enables content restriction, so parents can rest at ease. The panel has an extremely thin bezel, allowing you to see the entire screen from almost every angle for a more engaging viewing experience.
The clips on the back of the television help keep your cords and cables organized and tangle-free. Thanks to the optimized cable control, Samsung Crystal UHD makes for a neat home theater system. Bixby and Alexa are integrated into the voice-enabled remote, which is also compatible with Google Assistant. That means you can use your trusty virtual assistant with your brand-new TV without needing an additional smart speaker. With Bluetooth networking, you can wirelessly link speakers, soundbars, and subwoofers for the ultimate home theater setup.
Another nifty feature is screen mirroring. That means you can cast your iOS and Android mobile devices with Apple AirPlay2 and SmartCast. When not in use, the Ambient Mode transforms your new TV into a striking piece of art. The technology adapts the monitor to the overall aesthetic of the room. You can also set it to display your favorite painting or even family photos.
The Vizio P Series Quantum X 2020 is a fantastic 4K TV with incredible image quality. It has a VA panel with a high contrast ratio, which is boosted by a full-array local dimming feature. This allows it to create deep blacks. The high peak visibility quickly combats glare and provides an excellent HDR experience with vivid highlights.
The large monitor produces one of the brightest images a Smart TV can offer. It has a brightness of up to 1,200 nits, making it ideal for open-space homes with plenty of windows. The TV has 200 local dimming zones to increase black levels and contrast efficiency and quantum dots for a broader color gamut. It has a quick reaction time and uses Black Frame Insertion to produce transparent images in action-packed scenes. Most gamers can appreciate its short input latency, and it supports variable refresh rate (VRR) to minimize screen tearing.
It has somewhat small viewing angles, so it may not be ideal for larger TV rooms. Even though the SmartCast interface doesn’t have as many games as other services, it’s far more user-friendly and convenient. Sadly, this also means Vizio doesn’t have an app store, but you can probably work around that.
If the P-series is slightly out of reach, you can always turn to a previous generation model. The Vizio M Series Quantum 2019 is a stunning 4K television with excellent image quality. It features a VA screen with a high contrast ratio, excellent black uniformity, and a wide color gamut.
The full-array local dimming works remarkably well, and HDR material looks good despite the TV’s peak brightness limitations. The motion handling is pretty solid, and you can use the optional BFI (Black Frame Insertion) feature to minimize blur even further. Unfortunately, there are some uniformity problems, and the viewing angles, like most VA tables, are low. Nonetheless, it’s a great TV that performs well with a wide range of apps and platforms.
Sometimes a limited budget can lead to a limitless viewing experience. The TCL 40S325 is a perfect match for even the smallest entertainment budgets, with an incredibly accessible retail price. You get your favorite streaming platforms like Netflix, Hulu, and YouTube preloaded on the Roku website, so you can start streaming movies and shows right away. Without memorizing HDMI input positions or traverse complex menus, the simplified home menu makes it easy to control. You’re free to pick from a wide range of applications, playback devices, game consoles, and even broadcast TV inputs.
Many of your favorite shows and movies would look fantastic on the 40-inch screen, which has an optimal 1080p resolution. For faster searching and surfing, the Roku app transforms your smartphone or tablet into a voice-enabled remote. You can also attach your TV to an Alexa or Google Assistant-enabled smart speaker for more voice commands. When you need some privacy, the TV has a headphone jack you can use. You can play video games or binge-watch Netflix without disturbing your roommates or family members.
The TCL 6 Series is the company’s flagship television for 2020. The model represents a fresh take on the TCL 6 Series/R625 2019 with overall impressive performance. Thanks to the integrated QLED technology, the color gamut for HDR content is phenomenal.
The monitor can get bright enough in HDR to make highlights more pronounced. Due to the incredible VA panel, the contrast ratio is out of this world. However, that type of display technology usually means the viewing angles are slightly narrow. This isn’t a deal-breaker necessarily, but those of you with oversized couches might want to look for alternative budget-friendly solutions.
Another fantastic feature is the built-in Roku smart platform. The streaming service has an endless media library with the most popular TV shows, movies, and even linear channels. Since TLC 6 has a high contrast ratio, you can snuggle up in a candle-lit room to watch your favorite movie without straining your eyes. Overall, the TCL 6 Series 2020 is an excellent TV set for streaming. HDR material looks incredible, thanks to the impressive color gamut. And yes – it’s suitable for gamers too. The TV has an almost instant response time and a low input latency, both essential features for a solid gaming experience.
