How to Block Internet on a Nintendo Switch

The Nintendo Switch is a great gaming console that offers not only mobility but connectivity. There are times though, when you’ll want to restrict who can and can’t connect online from your console.

Thankfully, the Nintendo Switch offers several ways on how to block the internet or at least limit access. Read on to find out how you can do both.

Airplane Mode

The easiest way to limit internet access on your Nintendo Switch is to turn on the Airplane Mode. This cuts off the connection to any Wi-Fi network and prevents anyone from logging back in. However, simplicity of this method is also its shortcoming. It’s easy to go into Airplane Mode, but it’s also easy to exit out of it.

Note that when this mode is enabled both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth will be turned off. If your Joy Con is detached when under airplane mode, Bluetooth must be turned on manually to use it. Also, Airplane Mode is unavailable when your Switch is in TV mode.

To engage airplane mode, follow these steps:

  1. From HOME tap System Settings.
  2. On the menu on the left select Airplane Mode.
  3. Select Airplane Mode to engage it. Click on it again to turn it off.

You can also access this from the Quick Settings screen:

  1. Press and hold the HOME button until the Quick Settings screen pops up.
  2. Select Airplane mode to turn it on. Select it again to turn it off.

To enable Bluetooth while in Airplane Mode so you can use your Joy Con, do the following:

  1. From HOME tap System Settings.
  2. On the menu select Airplane Mode.
  3. Select Controller Connection (Bluetooth).
  4. Select enable Bluetooth Communication.

Internet Settings

Another method of limiting Wi-Fi on your Switch is to manually delete any existing network on the device. A console that doesn’t recognize a Wi-Fi network won’t connect to it without a password. Restricting access to this password is a good way to control who gets to connect to the internet and when.

To modify the Internet Settings, follow these steps:

  1. From HOME tap System Settings.
  2. Select Internet from the menu to the left.
  3. Select Internet Settings.
  4. Click on your WIFI network’s name.
  5. Choose Delete settings.

To reconnect to your Wi-Fi network, return to the Internet Settings menu and click on your network name. If you’ve set a password, you’ll be prompted to enter the same. The Switch will test the connection and prompt you to proceed. Click OK to finish the process.

Be aware that if you can’t find your network on the menu, stand closer to your router and click Y to search again. If you still can’t detect your network then there may be an error with your Wi-Fi itself.

If you can see your network’s name grayed out then your Wi-Fi’s wireless security is incompatible with your Switch. Refer to the Nintendo Support page for a list of compatible security types.

Parental Controls

Parental Controls aren’t a direct limitation on the accessibility of the console to the internet. However, some of the settings may be used to limit play time and connecting to social media.

To fully utilize Parental Controls, you’ll have to download the Nintendo Parental Controls app. You can find the app both on Android and IOS.

Once downloaded, you can modify the Parental Controls settings by doing the following:

  1. From HOME tap System Settings
  2. Choose Parental Controls

The Switch will then prompt you to sync your console with your app. Follow the onscreen instructions. Once set up, you can set limits from the app itself. Play Time Limits let you set daily time limits for use of the Switch, or individual times per day. In addition, Restriction Levels can set an age rating for different kinds of software. This is also where you can limit communication with other consoles and access to Social Media.

Eshop Restrictions

Another way of indirectly controlling online interaction is to set purchase restrictions on the Nintendo Account. You can create a separate account for your child which you can then supervise. To do so, you need to create a Family Group.

  1. Open your Nintendo Account on the website.
  2. Click Nintendo Account on the upper left corner.
  3. Select Family Group.
  4. Select Add Member.

If your child already has a Nintendo Account then select it. If not, create an account and then add them afterwards. If your child is under 12 years old, it will automatically be set as a Supervised Account. If not, this must be done manually. To do so, follow these steps:

  1. Select Family Group from the Nintendo Account menu.
  2. Choose the account you want supervised then select Set as Supervised Account.
  3. Click OK.
  4. A verification email will be sent to the address associated with the account. Open it to verify.
  5. Log in to the account you want supervised.
  6. Click Accept.

You can now set restrictions on what the account will be able to access, including online purchases. To do so, click on the Supervised Account to view the available restrictions. You can now restrict purchases or even viewing the Nintendo Eshop by ticking the appropriate checkbox.
