Can I Change My Snapchat Username?

Posted by Sydney on April 25, 2017

In 2014, millions of Snapchat accounts were leaked, leaving many users wondering if they could change their usernames in an effort to better protect their accounts post leak. However, despite this unfortunate incident, Snapchat does not allow users to change their usernames, citing security concerns. Thankfully, these and other users have options.

Username vs. Display Name

If you’ve been looking for a way to change your Snapchat username, you’ve probably come across some sites promising directions for doing exactly that. They are likely confusing the Snapchat username, which is used to log in to a Snapchat account, and the Snapchat display name (also called a screen name or “appear as” name), which is the name that people see when they interact with you. These can be one in the same if you’ve opted to do that. Or, you can change and re-change your display name to be whatever you like.

How to Change Your Display Name

If all you want is to have a new public facing moniker and you don’t care about altering your login credentials, then look no further. You can change your display name in one of two ways.

Method One:

1. Open the Snapchat app.

2. Tap on the ghost icon in the upper left hand corner.snpachatghost

3. Tap on the settings icon in the upper right hand corner.snapchatsettingsicon

4. Tap Name under the My Account section of your settings.

How to Delete Your Account

On the other hand, maybe you are worried that your login credentials have been compromised and you really want to change that username. If this is the case, Snapchat recommends deleting your account and creating a new one. Look to the following steps to delete your account.

1. Open the Snapchat app.

2. Tap on the ghost icon in the upper left hand corner.snpachatghost

3. Tap on the settings icon in the upper right hand corner.snapchatsettingsicon

4. Tap on Support under the More Information section of your settings.

6. A message will pop up with a link to the account deletion page. Tap on this link.

7. Enter the login information for the account you want to delete.

8. Tap Continue.

Your account will not be deleted immediately. Snapchat gives users the chance to change their minds by deactivating the account for a period of 30 days before deleting it permanently. You can undo the deletion at any point during this 30 days by logging into the account as usual. However, once the account is permanently removed, it can not be retrieved. It’s also important to note that the username for this account will become permanently unavailable. If you change your mind a year later and want your old Snapchat username back, tough luck. Nobody can have it – not even you.
