How to Cancel Amazon Kindle Unlimited

Kindle Unlimited is a program from Amazon that allows you to read as many books or magazines as you want from the Kindle library for a monthly charge of $9.99. It’s called Kindle Unlimited, but it isn’t unlimited.

How to Cancel Amazon Kindle Unlimited

If you take the name at face value, you’d assume that the entirety of the Kindle catalog is available for reading, which is not the case. You do not get complete access to everything that Amazon has published. Secondly, while you can read as many of those million books (and magazines) as you wish every month, you can only have ten at a time “checked out” to your Kindle or Kindle software.

Perhaps Amazon has tricked you with misleading ads making you believe you could check out books and do what you want whenever you want. Maybe you don’t have the money for a subscription? Perhaps you wanted to try Kindle Unlimited but wish to cancel before you get charged? How can you cancel your membership if you decide that the Kindle Unlimited program isn’t for you?

How to Cancel Kindle Unlimited

There are a few ways to cancel your Kindle Unlimited plan, so we’ll cover them separately.

Cancelling Kindle Unlimited from the Kindle Account Page

While Kindle Unlimited is the best eBook service out there right now, it isn’t for everyone. If you’ve decided to discontinue your Kindle Unlimited subscription, here’s how to do it.

Note: If you are paying for the service, you will need to cancel before the next billing period to avoid further charges.

  1. Navigate to your Amazon Kindle Unlimited page and log in. You will now see an overview of your Kindle Unlimited Subscription.
  2. Click the “Cancel Kindle Unlimited Membership” button in the left-hand corner.
  3. Then click on the “Cancel Membership” button.
  4. A new page opens asking, “Are you sure you want to end your membership?” Click on “Cancel membership.”
  5. A confirmation window appears stating that cancellation was successful and that your current subscription will continue until the next renewal date.

  5. A new page opens asking, “Are you sure you want to end your membership?” Click on “Cancel membership.”
  6. A confirmation window appears stating that cancellation was succeful and that your current subscription will continue until the next renewal date.

Again, Amazon will not close your Kindle Unlimited subscription until the end of your billing cycle, so you can still enjoy the benefits until that date.

How to Renew Amazon Kindle Unlimited

If you’ve canceled your Kindle Unlimited subscription and find a reason to hold on a little bit longer, you can easily renew it. Here’s how.

  1. Select the “Accounts & Lists” pull-down menu within Amazon and click on “Kindle Unlimited.”
  2. Click on the button “Continue Kindle Unlimited Membership.”
  3. Your membership is now reinstated. There aren’t any confirmation boxes so be mindful that once you click it, the subscription will automatically renew.

How to Know if Your Subscription is Cancelled (Confirmation)

Whenever you’re working with automatic renewal subscriptions, it’s a good idea to double-check that the service provider canceled everything successfully. There are a few ways to check this:

Check the Kindle Unlimited Account Page

You can follow the same steps as above to access the account page. Once there, look for an end date on your subscription. This end date means you’ve already set the account to cancel.

  1. Navigate to your Amazon Kindle Unlimited account. You will now see an overview of your Kindle Unlimited Subscription, showing the confirmed “End Date.

  2. If the account has already been cancelled (End Date already reached), the Kindle Account page will simply let you know that you do not have an Amazon Kindle Unlimited account.

Check Your Registered Email

Fortunately, Amazon will notify you about any changes to your account, subscriptions, orders, etc. All you need to do to ensure that your cancellation is successful is to check your registered email account and look for confirmation from Amazon.

This email will give you the date your Unlimited subscription will cancel on, a “Continue Membership button if you change your mind now or later, and some titles you should read at the bottom.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I cancel my subscription at any time?

Yes, you can cancel anytime, but you won’t get a refund. With Amazon Kindle Unlimited and many other services, you prepay for the next month. Therefore, hitting the cancel button cancels your subscription when the current billing cycle ends.

So, you won’t get a refund for the current month, but you also won’t be billed again on the renewal date.

Can I keep the books I’ve downloaded?

No. Once your account gets canceled, the books you’ve downloaded or checked out are no longer accessible once the current billing cycle is complete. If it’s a title you’re heavily interested in, you could look into the Amazon shopping portion of the website and purchase a digital copy.

If you’re reading a book right now, it’s best to check your renewal date before cancelation and plan accordingly.

Does Amazon give refunds for subscriptions?

Refunds depend on the circumstances, but Amazon’s official policy only allows refunds for a select few. For example, if you sign up for a paid subscription with a renewal date of 30 days or more (you’ll get billed in 30 days), you can cancel within the first seven days and get a refund.

This policy is more of a “try it before you commit” policy. On the other hand, if you’ve already set your subscription to cancel and it still renews, you can contact Amazon’s Support team for a refund. Assuming you canceled your subscription on the last day of your billing period, you may see another month charged. If this happens, it’s probably a good idea to contact the support team.

No More Kindle Unlimited

Now that you know the process for cancelling your Amazon Kindle Unlimited account, you’ll have to find another source for reading on your tablet. Regardless of your reasons for cancelling your Kindle Unlimited account, renewing the subscription is an easy process if you ever change your mind.
