Ever since IG introduced the Stories feature, scrolling through the news feed was never the same. They appear at the top of the screen once you open the app, and your favorites are organically arranged first for your convenience too.
Instagram Stories can be a lot of fun. Sometimes you don’t even need to go through the posts in the feed. But what if you open your favorite celebrity’s Story and you can’t hear a thing? Why does that happen?
iOS 13.1 Update Issue
In September 2019, Apple released its latest major version of the iOS 13 operating system. It’s iOS 13.1, and it’s the regular yearly system update, all iPhone and iPad users are used to by now. However, there have been reports that after some users updated their operating system to iOS 13.1, they’ve experienced performance issues. One of those is there was no sound on Instagram Stories.
That can be, understandably, quite annoying. You’ve gone through the lengthy process of iOS updates to make your phone work better, not worse. Now there’s no sound on your Instagram Stories. What can you do about it?
Report the Problem
Before you decide it’s time to downgrade to the previous iOS version, try some diplomacy. Instagram tends to be receptive to the complaints of its users. That’s especially true if the issue keeps popping up in all corners of the world.
A simple first step can be to report the issue directly to Instagram and see if it would get addressed immediately. Even though not everyone experienced the problem with the sound on Instagram Stories after the latest iOS update, but a lot of the people have. All you need to do is:
- Go your Instagram profile and select “Settings.”
- Then proceed to select “Help.”
- Select “Report a Problem.”
- From a pop-up screen, select “Report a Problem” again.
- You’ll then be able to write about the problem you’re experiencing.
- After you’re finished writing, select “Submit.”
Tinker with the App
There are a few other things you can do. If you do not hear the sound on your Instagram Stories, you might want to close the app and go to your phone settings and check the mic and camera access in the Applications. Try turning off and back on the access and see if the problem persists.
And if that didn’t’ work, you might as well bite the bullet and delete Instagram. Temporarily, mind you! Just uninstall and reinstall the app and check if you can hear the sound in your Instagram stories. The chances are that this step will fix that and any other issue you were having with Instagram.
Another Reason for the Lack of Sound
In case you can’t hear your Instagram Stories, but only partially, there could be something else that is the problem. For example, you can hear just fine a 30-Story rant from your best friend about the season finale of your favorite show. However, your favorite celebrity’s Story is mute. You then notice it says, “Instagram Music Is Not Available in Your Region.”
That means you’re in one of the many countries that can’t yet enjoy this feature. Someone you follow lives in one of the countries that have the most Instagram users. So, Instagram paid for the copyrights of the music they can use. If you’ve seen the notification, you’ll have to wait some more.
If you’re not too keen on waiting, you can always try to install a VPN and bypass the problem. It seems like an unnecessary complication, but if you don’t want to miss out on the Instagram Music feature, that’s certainly an option.
However, you could be living in the US, France, Germany, Australia, and still, see this message in your Instagram Stories. In that case, you’re dealing with a glitch. The best course of action is to try checking for an Instagram update. Instagram has pretty regular updates, and they often bring solutions to small glitches.
All you have to do is head to the Apple Store if you have an iPhone and Google Play Store if you’re using an Android phone. And if it doesn’t work out, then go ahead and uninstall and reinstall Instagram. Often, a simple reinstall will solve the small issues and glitches.
You Need to Hear the Story
So much of what makes Instagram great is visual. All the lovely arranged posts and perfectly captured moments. But Stories are great too, and they leave a lot of room for creativity. And music is often the essential component of a Story. Watching your friends lip-sync the latest hit song without hearing it doesn’t really cut it.
So, make sure you always have the latest Instagram update. And that the newest operating system is cooperating with the app. You can complain to Instagram if you can’t solve this problem.
