Captions Keep Turning On Netflix – What’s Going On?

Netflix captions serve a great purpose. Not only do they help people with impaired hearing, but they can also help you learn another language.

That said, if you’re watching content in English and the actors are shouting or talking ten to the dozen, captions can sometimes be superfluous. Moreover, they can be somewhat irritating. For that reason, you might want to get rid of them. Keep reading to learn how to disable captions on any device you may be using.

Turn Off Captions on the Netflix Website

Before starting, we just want to remind you that captions don’t usually have their own section. They’re included in the Subtitles section. You can recognize them by the CC sign in the bracket next to the language. If you’re watching Netflix through the website on a portable device, here’s how to turn off the captions:

  1. Play the video you’d like to watch.
  2. Click anywhere on the screen.
  3. When different icons appear, click on the one that looks like a speech bubble with dots inside of it.
  4. You’ve now opened the Audio and Subtitles settings.
  5. In the Subtitles section, you’ll see different subtitles and captions. Scroll down and select the last option which simply says “Off”.

There you have it! You shouldn’t be seeing captions anymore.

  2. Tap anywhere on the screen.
  3. Now, tap on the icon in the top right corner that looks like a speech bubble with dots inside it.
  4. You’ll now see all subtitle and caption options.
  5. Click on Off.

That’s it! The caption shouldn’t appear anymore and you’ll be able to continue watching your favorite movie or TV show without any distractions.

Turn Off Captions in the Netflix Xbox App

If you’re watching Netflix through your Xbox app, the process might be slightly different. Here’s how to turn off the captions:

  1. Open the app and play the video you’d like to watch.
  2. On the left side of the screen, you’ll see the Information screen.
  3. Select Audio and Subtitles section by pressing the A button on the controller.

Turn Off Netflix Captions on Apple TV

Finally, if you’re watching Netflix on Apple TV, here’s what you have to do:

  1. Enter the Settings.
  2. Click on General.
  3. Click on Accessibility and turn on Accessibility Menu.
  4. You can now launch Netflix and play the video you’d like to watch.
  5. Press the Menu button on your remote control.
  6. When the Menu opens, click on Closed Caption to unselect it, using the Select button.

Now, when Closed Caption is unselected, you shouldn’t be seeing captions anymore.

Captions Keep Turning On

If the captions keep turning on after you’ve disabled them, the problem may not be in Netflix itself. Rather, that the captions are still turned on somewhere in the settings of your device. Therefore, you’ll have to find them in the menu and disable them.

This often happens to users watching Netflix on their Xbox One. If you’re one of them, here’s what you have to do:

  1. Enter Settings on your Xbox.
  2. Click on the Ease of access.
  3. Select Closed Captioning off.
  4. Save settings change.

However, Netflix doesn’t have a solution for every device. For example, this issue keeps occurring to people with a Samsung Smart TV 2011 or 2012. It seems that some devices don’t always support the turning off of captions. That’s why Netflix suggests that its users try watching it on some other device to see what happens.

There’s one exception: Kids’ titles. It turns out that Netflix doesn’t save your preferences when it comes to Kids’ titles. Therefore, you’ll have to select them manually. If you want to set preferences for future movies, always do so while you’re playing a regular movie instead of children’s titles.
