How to Change Your Location in Meetup

Meetup is a social app that’s quite different from your run of the mill dating apps and social media platforms. It’s a place where you can find like-minded people and groups, and discuss everything from work-related stuff to religion, fitness, and so much more.

However, if you move or go on a vacation, you might want to update your location to easily find people in your new area. Here’s how to change location and tweak various other location settings in Meetup.

Location Settings

There are several location and distance settings you can change in your Meetup account. Each change can make your life easier and help you find more like-minded people a lot faster. Consider this one of the filters you can apply to the people you find.

Changing Account Location

Although most of the steps involved in changing your account location are the same, there are slight differences regarding where and what to select depending on your device.

For Android

  1. Bring up your profile page.
  2. Tap the button in the top right corner (the profile button).
  3. Tap “Edit Profile.”
  4. Tap on your current location.
  5. Search for a location.
  6. Tap the “Checkmark” button.

For iOS

  1. Bring up your profile page.
  2. Tap your name (top of the screen).
  3. Tap the arrow icon next to your location.
  4. Tap on “Current location”.
  5. Use the search function to find a new location.
  6. Tap “Save” (top right corner).

If you’re using Meetup on a computer, here’s what you need to do:

  1. Click your profile picture (top right corner).
  2. Select “Settings” form the dropdown menu.
  3. Click “General”.
  4. Click the “Edit” button next to your location.
    change location desktop
  5. Type in your new location.
  6. Click “Submit.”

Hometown Information

Meetup lists both your location and hometown information. The two don’t have to be the same. Here’s how you can change your hometown info:

  1. Go to your profile page.
  2. Go to “Settings.”
  3. Stay on the “General” tab.
  4. Select the “edit” button next to the “Hometown” field.

Location and Distance

Simply adding your location to your Meetup profile may not be enough to find like-minded individuals and groups nearby. However, using your location information to filter out results might yield overwhelming results.

Here’s one trick to filtering out Meetup groups and limiting them within a comfortable radius:

  1. Open your profile page.
  2. Go to “Settings.”
  3. Go to the “Add Interests” tab.
  4. Locate “Search Distance.”
  5. Adjust the distance to anywhere between 2 and 100 miles.

Changing the Location – Bonus Tip

Not every city or zip code is available in Meetup’s database. Does this mean that you can’t change your location to a custom one if it’s not in the list? – No. It just means that you need to take a different approach. Here’s how:

  1. Bring up Google Maps.
  2. Go to your location.

  3. Make sure the URL contains the following information: country, city, ZIP/postal code.
  4. Log into your Meetup account.
  5. Submit a request here.

  6. Copy and paste the Google Maps URL of your location.
  7. Request for a location change.

Keep in mind it might take a while before the change goes into effect.

Sharing Your Location

Now that you know how to change your location, hometown info, and the search distance, you might want to know how to share your location too. It can be quite handy when trying to meet new people.

For Android

  1. Tap “Messages.”
  2. Tap the “Plus” icon.
  3. Add the members you want to share your location with.
  4. Tap the “Pin” icon (on the left side of the text box).
  5. Tap “Share location.”

This will notify the selected members of your location.

For iOS

You can follow the same path to send your location from iOS. The only difference is that the “Share location” option is simply titled “Share.”

You can also do this when you’re in a group chat. However, keep in mind that if you do that, everyone will be able to see your location. This includes anyone that might join the group afterwards. That’s why it’s best to share your location in private conversations or to members you know, trust, or really want to meet.
