How To Change Your Name in Bumble

Posted by Robert Hayes on February 8, 2019

Bumble is a popular dating app that is known by some as the feminist version of Tinder. By requiring women to message first, Bumble eliminates the problem that many women experience on dating sites like Tinder of having enormous quantities of messages coming in from everyone on whom they swipe right. With more than 22 million users as of late 2017, Bumble has found considerable success in the dating app space, and it additionally has offerings for seeking platonic friendship and conducting business networking. We’ve created a great article on how to create an effective profile in Bumble which you should check out.

It’s easy to change some things in your Bumble account, like your educational status. However, the site has fairly strict controls on things like changing your name within the service, which may be an issue for some folks who would like to maintain a degree of privacy online. Your display name on Bumble can’t be changed from whatever it was set to when you signed up for the service, so if you decide to use a nickname or an alternative form of your own name, you’re out of luck if that isn’t what you signed up with. Fortunately, there is a way around this restriction. In this article, I will show you how to change your name in Bumble.

Two Methods of Account Creation

When you sign up for a new Bumble account, you have two options for creating the account. You can either create an account using your Facebook account, or you can create an account using a phone number. If you create the account using your Facebook account, then Bumble will use your name as it is listed in your Facebook account, and you will not have the choice to use a different name. If you use a phone number, you can provide whatever name you like.

Creating Your Account With Facebook

Bumble doesn’t actually post to Facebook but they will get all your profile information including your name. There is no way to change your name unless you change it on Facebook first, so change your name on your Facebook account BEFORE signing up for Bumble.

Once you choose the Continue With Facebook option and open the Facebook app, the following window appears.

Basically, the only required pieces of information are those in your public profile. You can uncheck all the others if you are not comfortable sharing them with Bumble. However, even if the information that is not required is unchecked, the app still gets your age and location.

Creating Your Account With a Phone Number

When you choose to use a phone number, you will tell the Bumble app your phone number and then the app will call you. Once you get the call, you have to type the last four digits of the caller ID in the given boxes. The call should arrive within 30 seconds of your signup. If you don’t have caller ID somehow you can choose to receive a text message instead of a phone call, but the caller ID route should work for most people.

When the verification is done you will be able to enter any name or birthdate you wish. However, note that your location will still be clearly visible in the profile.

What If I Already Have a Bumble Account?

If you already have a Bumble account and want to create a new one with a new name, the first step is to delete your existing account. (Sorry, you’re going to lose your existing matches and conversations.)

Step One:

Go to the settings menu in the Bumble app and click on the Delete Account button.

Once you complete a few steps to verify that you actually want to delete the account, you will be taken back to the Home screen. This will allow you to set up your profile again using a different Facebook account or with a phone number.

Step Two:

Even though you deleted your Bumble profile, if you originally used Facebook to sign up for Bumble, the app still has access to your Facebook account. Open the Facebook app and go to the Account Settings icon.

Once you are inside, swipe down to Settings & Privacy and open the drop-down menu. In the menu, tap on Settings.

In the Settings menu swipe up until you reach Apps and Websites and tap to open it.

On top of the Apps and Websites menu, you can find Logged in with Facebook settings. Tap on it to enter the settings and disable Bumble.

When you are inside the Logged in With Facebook setting, it should be easy for you to find the Bumble app. Tap on the circle in front to mark it, then tap Remove to revoke it’s permissions to read data from Facebook.

Now that you have removed Bumble from your initial Facebook account, you can connect the app to an alternative one which has the name you want displayed on Bumble, or sign up for a new account using a phone number.

Conclusion

Changing your name on Bumble isn’t trivial; you have to create a new account to do it. If it’s worth it to you to take that step, then it shouldn’t take you more than 10 minutes to complete the process.

I have an unusual first name which makes it very easy for people to google me and find my Facebook account. I signed up to Bumble using my Facebook account and it’s meant that guys who I didn’t match with were able to contact me via messenger and circumvent the Bumble ethos of waiting to see if a woman matches with you and decides to contact you from within the app. Another guy contacted me via Facebook messenger to ask me why I unmatched from him in Bumble. He went on to argue, insult and harass me until I blocked him in messenger, Facebook, Twitter, & instagram.
For an app that purports to be female focused, it doesn’t really do enough to protect women by letting them choose a nickname after they’ve had their account verified.
