How To Change your Name in PUBG

Posted by Jamie on August 17, 2018

TechJunkie has been covering PUBG for a little while now and have created a few beginner guides to get you up and running. Today’s guide was prompted by a reader question, ‘Can you change your name or appearance in PUBG?’ I didn’t actually know the answer to this question so decided to find out.

PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds is the biggest game in the world right now. Depending on your point of view, that is either a reflection of how gamers embrace battle royale or a reflection on how bad the gaming scene is. Either way, with an alleged 400 million players regularly logging into it, the game is huge.

With so many people logging so many hours in PUBG, the name you choose is an important decision. It is the one other players see when you kill them and it is the name they will see on the leaderboards. Make it a good one.

Can you change your name in PUBG?

If you couldn’t think of a cool name or used one you thought was cool in the very beginning and want to change it, you’re out of luck. With the exception of the PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds Event Pass which I will get to in a minute, you cannot change your game name.

There has been a lot of talk from developers about introducing the feature but as of version 1.0, there is no way of doing it. However, according to reports, the PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds Event Pass allows you to change your name. I have not seen details personally though so you will have to check.

Can you change your appearance in PUBG?

Aside from your name, your appearance also plays a part in how you are perceived in PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds. If you were impatient to begin playing and didn’t spend as long as you should have creating your avatar, you can go back and change it, for a fee.

Appearance changes do not include clothing. That is dealt with separately. Appearance here means your gender, hairstyle and color, face shape and features and skin color.

Currently it costs 3,000 BP to change your appearance in PUBG. Depending on how good a player you are, that’s quite a few games worth of farming just to change your appearance. If you have the BP to spend, here is how to do it.

  1. Navigate to the main menu in PUBG.
  2. Select Customization and then Appearance.
  3. Set your gender, hair color, style, face and skin color as you need.

You don’t have to pay to change your clothing in PUBG. The limitation here is that you have to have unlocked the clothing items in order to use them. Changing clothes can be done from the Customization menu. You can buy clothing items from Steam or unlock them in-game.

Coming up with a good name for PUBG

As you cannot (yet) change your name in PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, it’s a good idea to give the one you’re planning to use some consideration. I tend to have a few go-to names I use across games that I keep around so I don’t have to waste time figuring one out in a new game. There is nothing worse than having to waste precious minutes coming up with a name nobody else has thought of without making it sound dumb!

Here are a few quick tips for figuring out a good gaming name.

Keep it short and sweet

People are generally lazy and don’t want to type long names or names with lots of letters and/or numbers in them. Keep your gaming name short and succinct. Not only does it make typing easier but will make it much more understandable over TeamSpeak or Discord if you use voice chat.

Tune it to the genre

Different types of games lend themselves to different names. There is no point calling yourself DungeonMaster or Spellflinger in PUBG as the name doesn’t fit and will look dumb. Tune it to the game and it will sit much better. For example, choose something gun or survival related like ‘HiKaliber’ or ‘Surfiverr’. You get the idea.

Don’t be a douche

Even if you’re nine years old, don’t name yourself something a nine year old would or something overtly misogynistic, racist or just plain dumb. I have seen all sorts of names in PUBG and 90% of them are childish or stupid and immediately give the impression that player is not someone you want to team up with. They may be the best player on the server but you’re not going to want to team up with someone called ‘Filthypantyraider’!
