How To Quickly Crop A Photo To A Perfect 16:9 Ratio

One common photo-editing task is the conversion of a photo to a 16:9 display ratio. Many display devices (monitors, televisions, and cell phones in particular) have 16:9 screen ratios and so a 16:9 image will look perfect on those displays. Windows makes cropping an image to 16:9 very simple.

If you are using a Windows build older than version 10, then Windows Photo Gallery, a free program in the Windows Essentials suite, makes this stupidly easy to do. Although Windows Essentials is no longer available for download, if you have it already installed on your machine, you will be able to take care of this task without any issues.

Start Windows Photo Gallery and load your image.

Click Crop, Proportion, Widescreen (16×9)

Resize the box to what you want displayed in the final image.

Click Crop again; the image is cropped.

Close the program, the image is saved with the new dimensions.

That’s all there is to it. Retrieve the image file and upload where you wish.

If you have Windows 10, then you can achieve the same end with the Photos app.

Again, start Photos and load your image.

Click Edit & Create, Crop & Rotate, Aspect Ratio.

Select the 16:9 aspect ratio, and move the box around to get the part of the image you want to crop.

Click Done, and voila, the image has been resized. Save it and you’re ready to go.
