How To Delete Your Amazon Browsing History (Items You’ve Viewed)

Want to wipe the slate clean on Amazon? Fed up with the “people who bought X also bought Y” push marketing? Want to keep your shopping habits to yourself?

How To Delete Your Amazon Browsing History (Items You've Viewed)

Amazon made online shopping incredibly simple, with nearly everything you could want in one place. However, the company misses no opportunity to push an up-sell or related product into your shopping cart and try to squeeze just a bit more cash out of your wallet. While deleting your Amazon browsing history won’t stop data retention, it will halt all the “also bought” messages.

This article provides several options to delete your Amazon browsing history, including the product pages you checked out, any ordered products, items you want, and even data on the Amazon app. Let’s get started!

How to Clear Your Amazon Browsing History

Maybe you bought something a little embarrassing. Perhaps it’s a shared account, and you don’t want to deal with a game of twenty questions about every purchase. Or maybe you don’t like Amazon spamming you with suggestions after browsing items you don’t intend to buy. Whatever the reason, here’s how to manage your Amazon history.

How to Remove One Item From Your Viewing History

  1. Navigate to the Amazon home page.”
  2. Hover over “Account & Lists” in the upper right-hand corner.
  3. Choose “Browsing History” from the dropdown menu that appears.
  4. Select “Remove from view” to remove an individual item.

If you have only one item you want to remove, this is the perfect, simple solution. However, Amazon also offers a few more options to take control of your browsing history.

How to Remove All Items from Your Amazon Viewing History

If you want to clear your entire Amazon browsing history, you can easily do so.

  1. Go to the Amazon home page.
  2. Hover over “Account” & Lists” in the top-right section of your screen.
  3. Choose “Browsing History” from the dropdown menu that appears.
  4. Click on “Manage History” in the upper right-hand corner.
  5. Click “Remove all items from view.”

All of your previously viewed items will disappear all at once. If this sounds like a hassle, you can turn off the browsing history option altogether.

How to Turn Off Browsing History on Amazon

Turning off your browsing history is simple. It’s great when you no longer have Amazon constantly reminding you of the things you may have wanted at one time and decided against purchasing. If you want a shortcut, go directly to your Amazon browsing history page. Otherwise, follow the steps below.

  1. Visit the Amazon home page.
  2. Hover over “Account & Lists” at the top.
  3. Choose “Browsing History” from the dropdown menu that appears. Select “Manage history” just as we did above.
  4. Toggle the “Turn browsing history on/off” slider so that it turns grey.

Some have stated that the “Turn browsing history on/off” toggle sometimes turns back on. If you begin seeing your browsing history appear or notice messages under “Related to items you viewed” or “Inspired by your shopping trend,” revisit the above process and repeat it.

How to Hide Amazon Orders

Aside from hiding your browsing history, you can take it further and hide your orders. This process is beneficial if you’ve ordered a gift for someone with whom you share an account.

Note: You cannot delete order records since companies must legally retain them for a specific timeframe. Plus, Amazon can use order data for many personalized metrics and larger-scale stock and purchasing.

Although this process does not delete records, it hides them from the main “Your Orders” page. To conceal your order history, do this:

  1. Navigate to the Amazon home page.
  2. Select “Your Orders” from the dropdown option under “Account & Lists.”
  3. Browse your order history and select the “Archive Order” option located under the order.
  4. Confirm your desire to hide the selected order.

This action hides the item from view. To undo hiding it, select “View Hidden Orders” on your account page and then “Unhide Order.” This process is a handy feature for anyone who buys gifts from Amazon but doesn’t want curious family members trying to find out what you purchased for them or for people who are just a bit forgetful and can never remember to log out of their account.
