How to Delete a GroupMe Poll

GroupMe is an instant messaging app that efficiently connects larger groups of people. Therefore, the addition of a poll option was always a logical step. However, the poll feature was launched in 2017, seven long years after the app launched.

How to Delete a GroupMe Poll

After some improvements, GroupMe’s poll option works like a charm. It’s the best way to pull the trigger on important decisions, regardless of if it’s a business group or a night out with friends.

Despite these tweaks, the poll option still lacks some features. For example, there’s still no way to remove previous polls from a group completely.

Is There Any Way to Delete a Poll?

When somebody creates a poll in a group conversation, it will jump out on your conversation screen. It takes up a large portion of your screen and can make the conversation unclear.

Unfortunately, there’s no way to delete a poll permanently. However, any user can hide it from the conversation to make it easy to keep track. You can always check the poll from the poll menu, and we’ll describe that in the following section.

The main issue with the list of polls is that there’s no way to remove them once they expire. They all go to the “Expired” tab in the poll menu and remain on the server.

Therefore, after everyone’s been using the group for a long time, these polls can pile up, and it becomes hard to track them.

If you’ve had too many polls and your poll list is getting crowded, there’s only one solution. You can create a new group and add the same members to it. That will reset your feed, and you can start over.

At the same time, you don’t have to delete the previous conversation. If there’s still some important information there, you can easily go back and look for it.

But, do you know how to add a poll? Let’s explain that, too.

Adding a Poll

Adding a poll to the group shouldn’t be a problem. Every member of the group can add a poll fairly easily. Here’s what you need to do:

  1. Launch the GroupMe app.
  2. Open the group conversation where you want to add the poll.
  3. Tap the group avatar at the top-right of the screen.
  4. Select the “Polls” button from the menu.
Here you can see the list of all active polls in the conversation. Pressing the “Expired” tab on the top will take you to the list of all previous polls in the group.
  5. Tap the blue “Plus” sign at the bottom-right of the screen.
  6. Add the poll question and add as many poll options that you want (default is 2).
  7. Choose the time to end the voting.
  8. Tap the checkmark sign at the top-right of the screen.

Note: If you want to cancel poll creation, press the X sign at the top-left.

When you insert all the required information and create a poll, all group members will get a notification. They will immediately be able to vote for the poll.

Even if the poll gets lost in the conversation, everyone can access it via the “Polls” button once again.

Things That You Should Know About GroupMe Polls

If you want to use the GroupMe polls to their full potential, there are certain things that you should know.

First, don’t make your poll question lengthy. Try to be as concise as possible since you can only type 160 characters. Also, you can’t add more than ten voting options to the poll, so choose your options wisely.

Moreover, there’s a limit to the poll’s end date. The minimum set deadline is 15 minutes after you’ve posted the poll. The maximum ending date is two weeks after.

Finally, the number of active polls is also limited. You can have 50 active polls in one group chat, which should be more than enough.

If you ever have trouble creating a poll, it could be because of some of the reasons above.

There could already be 50 active polls in the group, for example. Also, check if you’ve reached the limit of characters in your poll question, or you’ve set an inappropriate expiration date.

Are Votes Public?

GroupMe polls are all private.

When you create a poll, all users can vote, but you won’t be able to see which user voted for which option. If you want to find that out, you’ll have to ask directly.

Keep in mind that any user can make a poll, and if you’re the creator, you can end it before the deadline.

Cast Your Vote

Although there are still some things to work on, adding this feature is a step in the right direction. Thanks to these private polls, you can turn every GroupMe conversation into a small democracy vote. But the removal and editing options for the polls are still missing.
