How to Delete Netflix Account Permanently

The market for streaming services has never been more crowded, or more competitive. Gone are the days when Netflix was your only real choice if you wanted video on demand, as their monopoly has been shattered by the likes of Amazon Prime, Hulu, Disney+, CBS All Access, and more.

So, if you’ve truly had enough of what Netflix has to offer, and want to move on to greener media pastures, then you’ve come to the right place, as we’ve put together this guide to help you to permanently delete your Netflix account.

How to Delete Your Netflix Account

The first step you’ll need to take is to cancel your current subscription. Once this has been done, Netflix will keep your information in their files for the next 10 months. After that, your account will automatically be deleted. However, if you want to ensure that it is gone sooner than that, it’s entirely possible.

End Your Netflix Subscription

Here are the steps you’ll need to take to end your membership:

Open your computer’s web browser and enter netflix.com into the browser bar and hit enter, or click on the link. Then, sign in to your Netflix account.
Choose your profile, assuming you have more than one.
Hover your cursor over the downwards pointing arrow next to your profile picture an click on Account in the drop-down menu.
Under Membership & Billing, click on the Cancel Membership button.
Click on the blue Finish Cancellation button to finalize the cancellation of your Netflix membership.

If you signed up through Google Play or iTunes, then you’ll need to go through their services to cancel your subscription. Netflix won’t be able to delete your account in this scenario until the end of the current billing period.

Delete Your Netflix Account

If you want your account to be permanently deleted before the 10-month window ends, then you need to open up your preferred email website or app, and send a message to privacy@netflix.com requesting that they delete your account.

If you have cancelled your account before the end of the current billing period, they will wait until the period is up before deleting your account. If you want it to be erased immediately, you’ll need to specifically ask them to do so in your email.

What Information Do They Keep?

After you’ve deleted your account, Netflix will retain certain limited information still. The list includes which devices you used the service on, the email addresses that the account was connected to, and the payment methods used.

This information is kept as part of their fraud prevention process, as well as for accounting reasons, and it can’t be used to contact you or to make any charges to your payment method. They also use this information to match the email address and payment method to you in case you ever decide to return to subscribing to their service.

How to Delete an Account Profile

If you don’t actually want to delete your entire Netflix account, but would rather get rid of one of the profiles on the account, along with the viewing history associated with it, here’s what you do:

Open your computer’s web browser and enter netflix.com into the browser bar and hit enter, or click on the link. Then, sign in to your Netflix account.
Hover your cursor over the downwards pointing arrow next to your profile picture and click on Manage Profiles.
Click on the profile that you want to delete.
Click on the Delete Profile button.
Click on the Delete Profile button again to confirm.
Click on Done when you’re finished.
