How To Delete a Single Instagram Photo from a Post with Multiple Images

Posted by Jamie on February 27, 2019

Can you delete a single Instagram photo from a post containing multiple images? If you add multiple images and then find something wrong with one of them, can you remove just the one and edit? These two questions arrived almost at the same time this week here at TechJunkie and, as always, we do our best to answer.

The ability to include multiple images within a single Instagram post was widely welcomed when it was introduced back in 2017. It allowed a much more rounded way of telling stories with a bunch of images instead of just one or multiple posts with an image each. While not formally named, the feature was quickly called ‘carousel posts’ like those in Facebook and has been used regularly ever since.

The one thing that is missing is the ability to edit individual images within a post containing multiple images. You could not remove a single post without deleting the whole thing and that’s the same today.

So the answer is no. You cannot delete a single Instagram photo from a post containing multiple images. As far as I know, there isn’t a third party app or hack to do it either.

You can do a lot of other stuff with images on Instagram though, including the following:

How to add multiple images to an Instagram post

The rollout of the carousel feature was well publicized but has since faded from memory. If you never paid it any attention, here’s how to add multiple images to an Instagram post.

  1. Select a new post from within Instagram.
  2. Select the Multiple icon at the bottom of the page.
  3. Select up to ten images or videos.
  4. Select Next.
  5. Edit the order if required, add filters or whatever.
  6. Select Next.
  7. Add a caption and then Share.

Delete a single Instagram image

You may not be able to take an individual image from a carousel but you can manage single images easily enough. You would hope so really give than the app is all about the image.

  1. Open Instagram and select the Home icon.
  2. Select the image you want to delete.
  3. Select the three dot menu icon in the top right.
  4. Select Delete.

Delete multiple Instagram images

You can also select multiple images to delete too if you’re doing some housekeeping or freeing up space. Instagram doesn’t let you select multiple images at once unless you’re adding them to a post so you’ll need to use a third party app. You could add all the images to an Album and then delete that but it’s a pain.

Apps such as Cleaner for IG for Android and iPhone does the trick. It will also let you delete multiple posts and generally tidy up your Instagram account. It is free with in-app purchases. There are other apps around that do the same thing too.

Delete an Instagram Album

I mentioned there about adding all the images you want to delete to an Instagram Album and then deleting that. So how do you do it?

  1. Open a post containing the Instagram Album.
  2. Select the three dot menu icon in the top right of the screen.
  3. Select Delete and confirm.

This will delete the entire Album as well as the post containing the images. It’s a little clunky but gets the job done.

Hide Instagram images instead of deleting them

The Instagram archive function isn’t so well known but is a very effective way to hide your old images without having to delete them. If they are the only copies of the images you have and you don’t want to lose them, this is a way of keeping them without them being on display.

  1. Select a post you want to archive.
  2. Select the three dot menu icon in the top right.
  3. Select Archive.
  4. Go back to the main Instagram screen.
  5. Select the clock icon in the top right. The post should appear on this page.

There have been a few reports that archives disappear if you temporarily shut down your Instagram account. I have never seen it first hand but it is something to be aware of if you use this function and decide to take a time out.

It seems a bit of an oversight to not allow you to delete a single Instagram photo from a post containing multiple images. While deleting the entire post isn’t a big thing, it’s extra work that seems unnecessary when an option to hold and select and then delete could be added.

Do you know of any ways to delete a single Instagram photo from a carousel post? Know of any apps that can do it? Tell us below if you do!
