What is the Diamond Icon in Tinder?
If you’re browsing Tinder and see a gold diamond icon next to their profile card, what does it mean? What is that diamond icon in Tinder?
The diamond icon is for Top Picks. This is a relatively recent feature that appeared late last summer and has been rolled out across the world. It first ran as an experiment to see how it went down with users. Presumably it went well as it was then rolled out globally. That experiment ran in the UK, Germany, Brazil, France, Canada, Turkey, Mexico, Sweden, Russia and the Netherlands before being rolled out to the US and across the world.
Tinder Top Picks
So what is Tinder Top Picks and what can it do for you? It’s another premium service offered by the app. If you’re a Tinder Gold subscriber, you may already have seen the Top Picks section in your app. It’s a curated match feature that highlights between one and ten matches it thinks you might be particularly interested in.
A bit like Coffee Meets Bagel where it’s more about the quality rather than quantity, Top Picks tries to use an algorithm to provide easy access to the most likely candidates with the minimum effort.
Top Picks seems useful for those who get easily bored by swiping or for whom time is of the essence and want fast access to potential dates without the hassle of having to scroll through dozens, or hundreds of them.
According to Tinder:
‘Picks delivers a personalized, premium user experience within Tinder Gold that puts a spotlight on unique characteristics that make our users stand out. Just like a friend who introduces you to someone special because you share common interests, Picks makes finding potential matches even simpler, more fun, and more useful. For years, our users have asked for this sort of feature — we couldn’t be happier to deliver.’
Using Tinder Top Picks
As mentioned, to use Tinder Top Picks, you have to be a premium member. If you subscribe to Tinder Gold, you automatically have access to Top Picks. If you use the free version of the app, you will still see the diamond icon but won’t be able to access any of the Top Pick Profiles.
If you’re a subscriber, you may already have checked the Picks page without even realizing what it was. If not, try this:
- Open Tinder and select the diamond at the top of the Discovery screen.
- Check out the selections and swipe left or right as you see fit.
- Wait for Top Picks to refresh daily or buy more if you really want to.
If you see the diamond icon in Tinder, it means that person is in your Top Picks. That’s all.
How does Top Picks work?
As usual, the specifics of exactly how Top Picks works is a closely guarded secret but we do know the principle. It uses your swiping habits to assess what qualities you like and what you don’t. Every time you swipe, Tinder records various pieces of data about the profile and uses them. It selects the things you most often swipe right on and filters profiles using those traits. The idea is to provide a list of the most likely people you would swipe on to save time and increase your success and therefore, addiction to Tinder.
There is also another element to Top Picks and that’s the trait. You will see things like ‘Traveler’, ‘Foodie’, ‘Creative’, ‘Scholar’ and others on the profiles within Top Picks. This is a trait assigned by Tinder according to what is in their profile. For example, if someone is a teacher and talks about it, they could be labeled as a Scholar. If you play guitar or write, you could be labeled Creative.
These traits are less meaningful but useful if you’re looking for a particular type.
One thing you need to know about Tinder Picks is that they are time limited. They refresh every 24 hours so if you find someone you like, swipe on them right away. Depending on how wide your pool is, they will likely appear again in the usual rotation but if you live somewhere with lots of users, that may be a while.
This time limitation is good I think. It encourages users to be proactive and take action instead of doing nothing. It should speed up your Tinder action quite nicely if your profile and pics are up to scratch. While it is likely that a particular Top Pick will reappear, there is no guarantee which forces your hand if you don’t want to miss out. That alone makes Top Picks worth checking out.
