EA Hopes to Put Out the Fires with SimCity Update 3.0
More than two months after its launch, EA and Maxis are still trying to fix the controversial SimCity. The uproar over the mandatory use of a persistent Internet connection aside, the game has been plagued with bugs since launch, and this week’s SimCity update to version 3.0 hopes to finally fix deal-breaking issues such as traffic routing and phantom air pollution.
EA promises a multitude of fixes and improvements in the upcoming update, scheduled for “later this week.” These include areas related to in-game traffic flow, trading, RCI tuning, transportation services, and parks. The full list of changes can be found at EA’s SimCity forum.
Gamers are hoping that this week’s update proceeds more smoothly than the 2.0 update, released in late April. Upon installing the 2.0 update, gamers reported issues with sewage levels, spontaneous pollution, reduced game speed, useless fire trucks, and the loss of saved cities.
Customer dissatisfaction over the game and the online experience forced EA to issue an apology in early March. Gamers who had purchased SimCity up to that point were given a free EA game as compensation for their difficulties. The situation has improved since launch, but many users are wary of EA’s ability to handle the game competently, and await the upcoming patch with mixed feelings.
SimCity is the fifth major game in the city building franchise. It launched for PC on March 5 and will be released for Mac OS X on June 11. Once released, the 3.0 update will automatically roll out to users via EA’s Origin platform.
