Is Echo Good or Evil in Locke and Key?

The Locke and Key series is an incredible new mystery show on Netflix, based on the comics with the same title. Even though you can get spoilers from the comics, the show is slightly different. It was the right decision on the director’s part because it keeps things interesting and the viewers on the edge of their seats.

Echo in Locke and Key has to be one of the most exciting and multi-dimensional villains in recent years. To answer the question in the title, Echo is evil. There is a lot more to her, though, so keep reading for answers (spoilers ahead)!

Locke and Key Background

Locke and Key is so gripping and intense because it has a lot of secrets, twists, and turns. Echo is the biggest mystery of them all. She goes by many names and has many forms, so some spoilers are necessary if you want to get a better grasp of Echo.

However, don’t worry, because we are not going to reveal everything. Luckily, this is not a single twist TV show. You have to pay close attention and be very smart to decipher everything that is going on during your first viewing.

The show is still criminally underrated, despite being pretty new. Since it is on Netflix, we can expect its popularity to grow, and hopefully, see it picked up for renewal. The second season is necessary due to some pretty shocking discoveries nearing the end of the season.

We’ll leave some of those discoveries to you, and let’s discuss Echo in more detail.

Who Is Echo?

The first time Echo enters the story, you feel sorry for her because she is a beautiful lady trapped in a well. She seems innocent at first, but don’t let her looks fool you. She is very manipulative, cunning, and evil.

We find out that the lady from the well is Echo when she forms a friendship with Bode, the youngest member of the Locke family. She tries to manipulate Bode into helping her get out of the well. For this, she needs the Anywhere Key, which would let her go anywhere. The keys are a vital element of the show, and they will get a separate section further down the line.

Later, we find out that Echo is also Dodge, a friend of Bode’s father, Rendell. After that, things get very complicated. Dodge used to be Lucas, a boy who got killed when pursuing the most potent key (Omega Key).

He went a little power-crazy, and then Rendell killed him. How in the world is he or she alive then?

Dodge’s Reincarnation

Lucas was possessed by a demon when he attempted to get to the Omega Door. Lucas was not bad at all, and he even had a girlfriend, Ellie, who loved him very much. Ellie loved him so much that she used the Echo Key to revive him.

That is how he got bound to the Well House. Unfortunately, instead of bringing back Lucas, Ellie brought back the demon that possessed him. That is why Lucas/Dodge/Echo is evil.

Fun fact, Dodge got his hands on the Identity Key. This key lets him change between Dodge and Lucas, female and male. Even the casting for this TV show was perfect because the actress that plays Dodge (Laysla De Oliveira) and the actor that plays Lucas (Felix Mallard) look alike.

The showrunners admitted that this was a happy accident, but it worked out wonderfully because it made the twist even more believable. This twist was also apparent, which the show masterfully used to trick the viewers. It successfully turned their attention away from a different, very well hidden twist.

However, we will not reveal the most suspenseful and intriguing spoiler here, so relax. Instead, let’s dive into the backstory of the mysterious keys, which play a massive role in this show.

Keys Explained

As the show progresses, you realize that the keys have gone full circle. From the Locke children’s father, Rendell, Lucas, and Ellie, to the present, directly to the children’s hands. Rendell never spoke of the keys in front of his family because he was too afraid that the same fate would find them (remember that there was a lot of violence and death because of the keys).

So, let’s discuss the essential keys briefly, and find out what each of them means:

  1. The Matchstick Key is the first one revealed. There’s no mention of it in the original comics, and its only use seems to be its fiery nature. It is a mighty weapon.
  2. The Anywhere Key is the one that Doge used to escape the Well House. It allows the user to travel to any door they already saw.
  3. The Identity Key also comes from the show. It allows the user to change his or her physical appearance.
  4. The Head Key is the most important one, along with the Omega Key. It is very versatile, and its use is mostly mental, as it provides immense knowledge.
  5. The Ghost Key is self-explanatory; it turns the user into a ghost until their body returns to the Key House.
  6. The Music Box Key is quite sinister despite its name. One can use it for manipulation and mind control.
  7. The Flower Key gives the user control over the flora.
  8. The Omega Key is an incredibly powerful key to a dark dimension. It opens the Black Door, which is near the Key House.
  9. The Echo Key has the divine power to reincarnate a person. The drawback is that the said person can’t leave the Well House (without the Anywhere Key).
  10. The Shadow Key summons an army of shadows, and it is just as bad as it sounds.

There are also the Mirror Key and the Mending Key, which were nearly irrelevant.
