How To Edit Snapchat Text After Posting

Snapchat is famous for its policy that, once something is sent, it is out of your hands. Over the years, the platform has introduced options to delete unread Snaps, but there was never really an option to edit anything after sending.

However, the recently introduced Memories feature allows you to edit your Snaps, including the text on them. Let’s see how it works.

Update Snapchat

Snapchat allows you to edit the Snaps you have previously posted. However, you can only edit those that are stored in your profile’s Memories. On the other hand, “regular” Snaps can’t be altered once they’re sent or posted.

If you want to edit your previous Snaps, make sure you have the latest version of Snapchat installed on your smartphone. Older versions don’t have the Memories feature.

If you have an Android smartphone, launch the Play Store from the Home screen and tap on the Menu icon in the top-left corner. Tap on the My apps & games option. Find Snapchat in the Updates pending section of the list. Tap Update. If Snapchat isn’t on the list, you’re running the latest version.

In case you have an iPhone, launch the App Store. Tap on the Updates icon – it is the second from the right in the menu near the bottom of the screen. Find Snapchat on the list and tap the Update button next to the app’s icon. If Snapchat isn’t on the list, you have the latest version.

Edit Through Memories

With the latest version of the app installed on your device, let’s investigate the editing options the Memories feature offers. Here is how Snapchat’s native solution works. Have in mind that the steps are identical for both the Android and iOS versions of Snapchat.

Step 1

Launch the updated app from your phone or tablet’s Home screen. If you’ve been logged out of the app during the update, log in once more.

Step 2

Now, go to the Camera screen. By default, the Camera view should be the first thing you see. However, if you’ve opened Stories or Chat windows to see what’s new, just tap on the circle icon located near the bottom of the screen.

Step 3

Go to Memories. Once the Camera screen activates, you should see another, smaller circle below the standard Camera button. That’s the Memories button. Tap on it to go to the Memories section of the app.

Step 4

When the Memories section appears on the screen, you’ll have the choice between the Camera Roll and Snaps tabs. The former allows you to edit any picture you have on the Camera Roll. The latter is there for viewing and editing Snaps you saved to Memories. Choose the one that has the Snap you’d like to edit.

Step 5

Browse the Camera Roll or the Snaps section of the Memories for the picture you would like to edit. Once you’ve found it, tap on it.

Step 6

When the picture loads, you should tap on the Edit & Send button. Tapping this button will bring up the menu of available actions. It will appear at the bottom of the screen.

Step 7

The left-side portion of the menu has the Delete, Share, and Edit options. The blue circle on the right opens the Send menu. Tap on the Pencil icon to open the Edit menu at the top of the screen.

Step 8

The Edit menu contains five icons. Paintbrush, scissors, sticker, letter T, and another pencil comprise the list. To the left of them, you’ll see the Done button. The Snapchat Timer icon is located at the bottom of the screen.

Here is what each of these tools does:

1. The Paintbrush tool hides various effects that you can add to the image you’re editing.
2. The Scissors tool is there for when you want to make a personalized sticker from a portion of your image.
3. The Sticker tool allows you to add existing stickers to your Snaps. You can add as many as you want to – there’s no limit. Stickers are sorted by categories for easy navigation.
4. The Text (or Letter T) icon is next. It allows you to insert, edit, and remove the text that’s on the image you’d like to edit.
5. The Pencil icon is there for the creative bunch. It allows you to draw directly onto the image. There are many ways in which you can customize your pencil.
6. The Timer tool is located at the bottom of the screen. It allows you to alter the timer for your Snap. The number on it represents how long a Snap remains visible to the receiving party once they open it. The default setting is 3 seconds.
   

Tap on the letter T icon to edit the text on your Snap.

Step 9

The text box will open and the keyboard will appear on the screen, allowing you to type in your text. You can alter the text or enter a completely new one.

Remember that 80 is the maximum number of characters per caption. This limitation includes spaces and punctuation. You can tap on the T icon to change the size and color of the text. You can change the text color using the color slider that’s located on the right side of the screen.

Once you’re satisfied with what’s written and how it looks, tap the Done button.

Step 10

You can now change the position and the angle of the text. You can drag the caption bar to wherever you want it on the screen. Have in mind that the default (small-size) captions can only be moved vertically. On the other hand, captions written with big letters can also be rotated and moved left and right.

If you’d like to make your caption smaller, pinch the text with your thumb and index finger. In case you’d like to enlarge the text, spread your thumb and index finger outwards. To rotate the caption, rotate your thumb and index finger over the text – counter-clockwise motion will tilt the text to the left and clockwise motion will rotate it to the right.

Step 11

Once you finish tidying up your caption, you’re ready to send or publish your refreshed Snap. Tap the arrow icon in the bottom-right corner of the screen. Choose whether you want to publish the Snap as a Story or send it to a friend or two.

Edit as You Go

Even though Snapchat allows you less control over your Snaps and Stories than Facebook and Instagram, the introduction of Memories is a step forward. Among many other things, it allows you to edit your Snaps’ captions.
