How to Factory Reset Your Nest Indoor Cam

Nevertheless, as with any electronic gadget out there, there’s a possibility that Nest Indoor Cam sometimes won’t work as intended. If it becomes unresponsive after the installation or the app freezes during setup, you might need to reset it to factory defaults. Let’s take a look at how to do it.

Removal from the Account

Some Nest cameras have the factory reset button, but that is not the case with Nest Indoor Cam. There is only one way to reset this security camera – you need to remove it from your Nest account.

You can do it from your mobile device or a computer, and the process is the same. If you’re using a computer, go to home.nest.com and follow the instructions.

First, you need to open the Nest app on your device. Then you need to select the camera you wish to remove on the Home screen. At the top of the screen, there’ll be a gear icon that you need to tap to open the camera’s settings.

After you enter the settings, note down how you’ve set each camera option. Alternatively, if you’re on a computer, take a screenshot with your phone or PrintScreen option. But do not skip this step – you’ll need this information when restoring the settings once you reconnect your camera to the app.

Once you’ve noted everything down, you can scroll to the bottom of the screen where you’ll find the option named “Remove camera.” Tap or click on it, and you’ll be asked to confirm.

The Purpose of Factory Reset

Fixing functionality issues of Nest Cam Indoor is not the only possible purpose of factory reset. Sometimes people need to perform a factory reset if they want to give the camera to someone else. If this is the case, you’re done. But if you’re going to fix some technical issues and intend to use the camera further, then you need to reconnect it to the app and install it again.

It’s also important not to cancel your Nest Aware subscription if you wish to continue using your Nest Indoor Cam. It has nothing to do with the reset, and it will only complicate things.

Once you remove your camera from the Nest Account, all the settings will go back to defaults, and you’ll lose your recorded Video History. That’s why it’s crucial to make sure that the factory reset is the right action to take.

Restart or Factory Reset?

So, after you remove it from the Nest app, it will forget the WiFi password and network name, and won’t be able to reconnect automatically. After you reconnect it to the app, all your customized settings will disappear (go back to defaults).

If you aim to add your camera to a new account or to get rid of it entirely and you have a Nest Aware subscription, you’ll have to cancel that subscription before performing the factory reset. That will lead to further irreversible loss. As soon as you disconnect your camera from the app, all your snapshots, Activity Zones, and entire video history will be erased. And once all that is deleted, it’s gone for good – there’s no way to recover any of it. Nest does not keep backups.

However, there is a way to preserve the video footage if it holds some particular value, emotional or otherwise. You need to create time-lapses or video clips, then download them to your computer or phone for safekeeping before performing the factory reset.

For all the reasons mentioned above, you should try restart or other troubleshooting options before you decide on the factory reset. Being fully aware of all the permanent loss is an essential part of the decision.
