How to Forward a LinkedIn Message

LinkedIn is constantly upgrading their platform to ensure that their users get the best features. With the recent updates, we’ve got something that will make messaging on this platform much easier.

That is the new Forward Message feature. This article will review the recent upgrade and show you how to use it.

The LinkedIn Forward Message Feature

If you frequently use Facebook or Instagram, you probably know that you can forward any message you receive on those platforms. That can save you tons of time and make messaging much faster.

You can now do that on LinkedIn as well. However, their Forward Message feature isn’t exactly the same.

LinkedIn allows you to forward messages from conversations only to your 1st-degree connections. Since LinkedIn newbies probably don’t know what that means, we’ll explain it in the following section.

LinkedIn Connections Terminology

On this platform, people that have joined your network are called connections. There are four types of connections that make up your network:

  1. 1st-degree connections
  2. 2nd-degree connections
  3. 3rd-degree connections
  4. Members of LinkedIn Groups

The degree or level that you have achieved with certain connections dictates how you can interact with them. Different features are available to different connection types. That includes the Forward Message feature which is exclusive to the 1st-degree connections.

1st-degree connections: These are the people that you are directly connected with. You have either accepted their invitation or they’ve accepted yours. Next to their names, you’ll notice the 1st-degree icon, signifying the first connection type. You can send your 1st degree contacts direct messages on LinkedIn. You’ll also be able to send them forwarded messages.

2nd-degree connections: These are the people that are connected to your 1st-degree connections. You’ll notice the 2nd-degree icon on their profiles, next to their name. LinkedIn allows you to contact your 2nd-degree connections through InMail. You can also send them an invitation by clicking on the Connect button on their profiles. If they accept, they’ll become your 1st-degree connections and you’ll be able to message them directly.

3rd-degree connections: These are the people that have established a connection with your 2nd-degree connections. As you’ve probably guessed it, you’ll notice a 3rd-degree icon next to their names. You can send them an invitation only if their full names are displayed. If you only see the first letter of their surname, you won’t be able to send them an invitation.

LinkedIn Group Members: These people belong to your LinkedIn network because you’re members of the same LinkedIn group. You can message them through the group or directly on LinkedIn.

Profiles of people that are outside your network (don’t belong to the categories mentioned above) have limited visibility and features. In some cases, you can message them through InMail but that usually isn’t an option. You can add them to your network by clicking the Connect button on their profile.

Important Things to Know About the Forward Message Feature on LinkedIn

As mentioned, the LinkedIn Forward Message feature differs from the one you’re used to on Facebook and Instagram.

On LinkedIn, you cannot forward messages to Groups. You can only forward them to individual contacts.

A person that received your forwarded message won’t be able to forward it to someone else. In other words, a specific message can only be forwarded once. You can forward the same message to different people though.

People who have received your forwarded messages will know who you’ve forwarded the message from. They’ll see the name of the person next to the message’s content.

Enjoy Your LinkedIn Experience

Though a bit different than its Facebook and Instagram counterparts, LinkedIn’s Forward Message feature is still quite handy.
