Roku is one of the most popular streaming platforms available. It features a lot of free content, but also offers access to your favorite paid streaming services like Netflix, Hulu, HBO, and others. In addition, Roku has a great interface with a recognizable purple color and unique TV remote.
It’s easy to use and you can even customize it to your preferences. But every once in a while, your Roku might report a “Not Enough Space” error. Why does this happen and how can you fix it?
Roku Express Issue
Those who’ve been using Roku Express players might have experienced issues with not enough space more than others. When users were trying to add a channel or attempting to run a channel, they’d see this error. This was the case for some of the Roku Express models, and there were complaints to Roku directly. The issue was solved quickly because Roku provided an update to fix this bug.
If you want to check if there’s an update available for your Roku player, all you need to do is go to Home>Settings>System>System Update>Check Now. Even if you don’t have issues with enough space on your Roku, it’s probably best to always have the latest update.
One of the ways you can free up space on the Roku device is by deleting channels. If the issue of not having enough space on your Roku ever comes up, this probably means you’ve downloaded quite a few channels. Perhaps this notification will encourage you do some spring cleaning of your Roku!
Revise all the channels you have and see which ones you actually use. There are probably a few you downloaded thinking you’d watch them but ended up not doing so. This action will make scrolling through Roku a lot easier and faster. Here’s how you delete a channel from Roku:
- Go to your Roku Home screen and click on “My Channels”.
- With your remote, select the channel you want to remove and then press * on the remote.
- Select “Remove channel” and then press “OK” on the remote.
- Select “Remove” again and press “OK” to confirm.
Add SD a Card
In case you’re not looking to delete anything on your Roku player, your other option can be adding an SD card. Some Roku players provide access to a micro SD card slot. This could be especially beneficial if you need to expand the amount of internal memory to add more games and channels. Follow these steps to ensure your SD card works properly:
Insert the SD card into your Roku player. You will probably hear a click when it’s set in place.
When your SD card is inserted, select “Format” when “micro SD card detected” appears. Anything that was on the SD card will be deleted at this point. Therefore, make sure to save data before this. If it’s not a new SD card. Then just press “Continue” and “OK” when it’s done formatting.
Removing the SD card
If you decide to remove the SD card, you should know that everything stored on it won’t be deleted. However, without the SD card installed, all the channels and games you had there, need to be downloaded again on Roku. You can’t move the channels and games stored on the SD card on a different Roku device. Also, for the best results, you’ll need an SD card with a minimum of 2GB storage.
Freeing up space on the Roku could be fixed with an update or removing unused channels. You can also add space instead of freeing it. But sometimes, none of these solutions are good enough. You keep seeing the “Not Enough Space” and no amount of troubleshooting is fixing the problem.
In these situations, your best course of action is to perform a factory reset on your Roku device. It can be disappointing because it means you’ll have to go through the setup again, but it’s worth it if it resolves the issue. To do a factory reset, follow these steps:
- Take your remote and press the “Home” button.
- Scroll down and then select “Settings” then “System”.
- Now locate and select “Advanced system settings”.
- Select “Factory reset”.
- Finally, select “Factory reset everything”. And then continue to follow the instructions you’ll see on the screen.
More Space Means More Fun
If you’re not interested in getting rid of any channels and games you’ve downloaded on the Roku, a micro SD card can be your gateway to even more entertainment content. However, in case you’re more curious about curating your Roku feed to perfection, you can make sure you always have the latest update. And that not a single channel is unused.
