How to Get Echo Dot to Play Apple Music

Over the years, Echo Dot has been one of the most popular Amazon Echo speakers – it’s convenient, portable, and provides high-quality sound. That’s why it’s compatibility with the majority of popular music services was a big upside ever since it came out.

As with all Alexa-based devices, Echo Dot wasn’t initially compatible with Apple Music. However, recently this feature finally became available for Alexa devices, too.

If you want to listen to your favorite tunes using the Apple Music service, keep reading. This article will explain how to set everything up in a matter of minutes.

Step One – Do You Have Everything You Need?

Playing Apple Music with Amazon Alexa should be a simple task if you have everything that’s required. Before you proceed with the setup, therefore, make sure you’ve ticked every box.

First up, you should check If Apple Music and Amazon Alexa service are compatible with your location. Currently, Apple Music is available in less than 20 countries, including Australia, Brazil, Canada, France, India, Germany, Japan, Mexico, Spain, United Kingdom, United States, and others. Check the Apple website for the full list.

Obviously, you’ll need an Apple Music subscription, or else you won’t be able to play any music. If you’re not a member of Apple Music, you need to use your smartphone device and go to the official Apple website. From there, you can subscribe to the Apple Music membership.

Second, you’ll need a smart device with an installed Alexa app. This should be on the same network as your Echo Dot device and the two should be connected beforehand.

Also, you should update your smart device’s operating system to the latest possible version. If you’re not sure how to do so, look for a guide online. Finally, check the device’s app store for the most recent version of Apple Music. After that, you’re good to go.

Step Two – Enable Apple Music

You now need to enable Apple Music from your Alexa app. To do so, follow these steps:

  1. Launch the Alexa app on your smart device.
  2. Press the “Menu” (three horizontal lines) button at the top-left corner of the screen.
  3. Choose the “Settings” menu.
  4. Select “Music” from the “Alexa Preferences” section.

  5. Select “Link New Service”.
  6. Find and select Apple Music.
  7. Tap the “Enable to Use” button.
  8. Go through the on-screen instructions to set up your Apple ID.

When you successfully log in to an Apple ID account, you’ll be able to use the Apple Music service with your Echo Dot device.

If you want to disable Apple Music from your Echo Dot, follow steps 1-6 from above and then tap “Disable”.

Note: There’s an alternative way to enable Apple Music. Just go to the skill store on Amazon’s website with your account. Then, find the Alexa skill and enable it on your Echo Dot device.

Step Three – Play Apple Music Using Your Voice

With Apple Music installed, you can use voice commands to play anything from the service. This includes individual tunes or albums, artists, and even different genres.

On top of that, you can pick a playlist that you’ve made or a pre-made playlist from Apple’s music editors. Moreover, you can always tune in to the Beats 1 radio and listen to the most recent hits.

To play Apple Music, you just need to give out the “Alexa, play [desired music] on Apple Music”. For example, you can say: “Alexa, play Cooking Songs on Apple Music”, or “Alexa, play Beatles on Apple Music”.

Making Apple Music Your Default Player

If you prefer playing all your songs through Apple Music, you can make it your default music service. This way you won’t have to end every command with “…on Apple Music” when you want to play a tune. Follow these instructions:

  1. Launch the Alexa app on your smart device.
  2. Tap the “Menu” icon at the top-left of the screen.
  3. Select “Settings”.
  4. Go to “Music”.
  5. Press “Default Services” under the “Account Settings” section.
  6. Select “Apple Music”.

This should make your Echo Dot automatically play songs via Apple Music. You can try it out by saying: “Alexa play [one of your Apple Music playlists]” or “Alexa, play Beats 1 radio”. If it automatically starts, it means that Apple Music is now the preferred music service.

Something Isn’t Right? Ask Amazon

If you’ve followed the article thoroughly, you should’ve set up Apple Music on your Echo Dot quite easily. However, you may encounter a situation where your device can’t install the Apple Music skill for some reason, or you may come across other problems.

When this happens, you should turn to the Amazon support team and ask for help. The customer service agents should provide you with the necessary information to help you set up the music service as soon as possible.
