It’s amazing that something as simple as a digital sticker on a social media platform could become so popular. They aren’t quite on the same level as emoji but are certainly used almost as much by certain demographics. If you want to know how to get stickers in WeChat to use in your own conversations, this tutorial is for you!
Stickers work just like their analog equivalent. Rather than peeling the back and sticking them to something, here you attach them to a chat, post or Moment in WeChat. Other social networks use them so why not WeChat?
As WeChat is aimed at teens and tweens in the west, it is this market that is most likely to use a sticker in their posts. There are some available as standard in WeChat and you can acquire others or even make them if that’s your thing.
Stickers in WeChat
You will already have access to stickers in WeChat. Some are included within the app for you to choose when putting together your comment. You will find stickers beside the heart icon on the selection bar along with emoji. If you have some, you will find them there along with any GIFs or other media you have loaded into WeChat.
To get new stickers, you could try one of these methods:
Save stickers you’re sent
Use the power of social media to collect new stickers to use in your own chats. Save any stickers sent to you or added to group chats to grow your collection. It’s the simplest way to add new stickers to WeChat. All you need to do is press and hold any sticker you want to save and select Add to Stickers from the popup menu. That sticker will be saved and will be accessible from the face next to the heart icon.
Use the WeChat sticker store
WeChat regularly publishes new stickers to use in the app and are mostly free. You can access the sticker store from within a chat.
- Select the emoji icon at the bottom of a chat screen.
- Select the ‘+’ in the bottom left of the emoji screen.
- Browse the selection of stickers and select Get to those you want.
- Repeat as many times as you like to get all the stickers you like.
Use third party sticker apps
There are a bunch of third party apps for both Android and iOS that offer stickers you can add to WeChat. Some of them are actually very good while others aren’t quite so good. Either way, check your relevant app store for sticker apps and install any you like the look of and have good reviews.
Create your own WeChat stickers
Another way to get stickers for WeChat is to create your own. It takes a little effort but works well and offers the opportunity to be completely original. You can use a GIF from anywhere but repositories like Giphy are a logical choice.
- Acquire your GIF from wherever you like and save it to your phone or computer.
- Resize it until it is less than 500KB so it complies with WeChat size limits.
- Save your GIF to your phone.
- Open a chat and select the sticker icon next to the heart at the bottom.
- Select ‘+’ by the chat window to add from phone.
- Select the ‘GIF and add it.
GIFMaker is a useful site for resizing GIFs. You can select any size, upload your GIF, hit Resize GIF and you’re good to go.
A couple of people I know who do this said it is much easier to create your stickers on a computer and use WeChat Web to transfer them.
- Open WeChat Web on your computer.
- Scan the QR code on the screen with your phone while logged into WeChat.
- Use the File Transfer option to transfer files from your computer directly into WeChat on your phone.
You can transfer music, video, stickers and general files this way so if you’re into WeChat, this is definitely something you want to get used to doing. You can then access your new sticker in the usual way.
If you’re really talented, you could try out for WeChat’s sticker submission program. This is where you create a sticker, submit it to WeChat and they consider it for inclusion within the WeChat sticker store or the app in general. You will need to speak Chinese to make head or tail of the website but this is apparently a legit offer open to anyone with graphic design skills.
That’s how to get stickers in WeChat. Know of any other ways to get them? Can you suggest any good sources for stickers or apps that have good ones? Tell us below if you do!
