Galaxy S8/S8+ – How to Block Calls

Posted by Arch on August 24, 2018

What can you do if you want to stop receiving calls from a particular person? This unpleasant situation is very common, and you can solve it in several ways.

But call blocking isn’t just useful for personal reasons. Being able to block spammers is becoming extremely important. Between telemarketing and phone-based political campaigns, it can be hard to find a moment’s peace.

Blocking Callers from the Phone App

If you have the exact number that you want to block from your Galaxy S8/S8+, you can follow these steps:

  • Select the Phone App

On your home screen, tap on the phone icon.

  • Tap on More

In the upper right corner, select the three dots icon.

  • Select Settings

  • Select Block Numbers

  • Add Phone Number

Simply enter the phone number you want to avoid seeing in the future. From here, you can also select a number from your recent calls list. If you want to unblock somebody, you can simply tap the minus sign by their number.

Block Callers from Contacts List

You can repeat the same process by browsing your contacts list. If you want to get rid of a number of potential callers at the same time, this is a good way to do it.

  • Select the Contacts App

You can find the Contacts icon on your app screen. Swipe up or down from your home screen to get there.

  • Find the Contact that You Want to Block

  • Tap on the Contact

  • Tap on Details

  • Choose the Menu Icon in the Top Right Corner

  • Select Block and Tap Again to Confirm

To unblock a contact, follow these steps:

Contacts App > Find the Contact You Want to Unblock > Details > Menu > Unblock

Remember that blocking a person won’t remove them from your contacts list.

How Can You Block Unknown Callers

The above methods work if you know who to block. But what about spammers and other unknown numbers?

  1. You Can Block All Unknown Numbers

If you want to block calls from unknown numbers, here is what you should do:

  • Tap on the Phone App

  • Select More

  • Select Settings

  • Choose Block Numbers

  • Switch the Block Unknown Caller Toggle to On

But since this makes you difficult to reach in an emergency, it’s better to take a more specific approach.

  1. Use Samsung Smart Call

Smart Call is a Samsung app that gives you access to a block list that is based on reports by Samsung users. If you have a Galaxy S8 or S8+, this is one of your best options for getting rid of spam.

If you have Smart Call turned on, you’ll be notified of suspicious calls. You can decline or ignore them as you see fit. If an unwanted caller manages to reach you anyway, it’s very easy to report them.

Here is how you can activate this feature:

  • Select Settings

  • Choose Advanced Features

  • Select Caller ID and Spam Protection

  • Switch the Toggle to On

A huge upside of using Smart Call is that you can see why the caller has been reported. For example, you can still take charity-related calls while avoiding telemarketing ones.

A Final Word

If the above blocking methods didn’t work, you can also contact your carrier. There are third-party apps that you can use to filter out spam. Although it can be exhausting, you shouldn’t give up until you’ve gotten rid of your problem caller.
