HTC U11 – Sound Not Working – What to Do

Who do you call when your smartphone goes completely mute? We don’t know the number, but we can certainly shed some light on this frustrating issue and help you troubleshoot when your HTC U11 suddenly refuses to produce any sound at all.

HTC U11 - Sound Not Working - What to Do

A lack of sound can happen for a good bunch of reasons, which not only include buggy software but also indicate some possible hardware issues. In some cases, however, the reason is less complex.

Let’s proceed with the tips to try and restore sound to your HTC U11.

STEP 1: The Dirt Check

Sometimes you need to get the basics out of the way first, like cleaning your speakers, for instance. As silly as it sounds, there might be some dirt blocking them. You can just try and run a cotton swab across them, or you could buy a can of compressed air and blow the dirt out of the speakers. If your U11’s cover is blocking your speakers, try to remove it and test to be sure. This can work, especially when the sound from your phone is muffled or very quiet.

STEP 2: Volume Controls Check

If you can’t hear the sound at all, you should also check your volume controls. Sometimes the simplest solutions are the ones that do the job. First, press the Volume Up and Volume Down keys to see where your volume is set at.

STEP 3: DND Mode Check

Checking your U11’s Do Not Disturb (DND) settings is the next step. Slide two fingers downwards from the top of your phone’s screen and tap the “Do not disturb” icon to switch between silent mode on and off.

STEP 4: Airplane Mode Check

Another important step is to check that you didn’t enable Airplane Mode by accident. While it wouldn’t cut off the sound per se, it would disable your internet access as well as any Bluetooth connectivity. If you noticed sudden sound issues when watching a streaming video or your wireless headphones disconnected – that’s probably why.

STEP 5: Soft Reset

Sometimes a simple restart of your HTC U11 is enough to resolve sound issues. All you have to do is to press the Power button and hold and then tap Restart.

If your phone doesn’t respond when you touch the screen or press the buttons, then press and hold the Power and Volume Down until the device vibrates and then release both buttons. It may take up to 15 seconds before the vibration kicks in.

STEP 6: Check for Updates

There is a chance that you are experiencing sound issues because of a system software bug. Make sure that your HTC U11 is online, then swipe up from the Home screen, and find and tap Settings. Next, tap About, choose Software updates, and then tap Check now.

STEP 7: Clear App Cache and/or App Data

Some apps might be causing issues to your phone’s system that directly affect speakers. If all else fails, you could thus try cleaning your application cache. If you suspect that a certain app may be blocking sounds, you can use the Clear App Data option to clean its cache only. However, keep in mind that this will wipe your logins, preferences, and other personal data you have stored for that particular app.

STEP 8: Factory reset

This should be used as a last resort for restoring your sound. A factory reset will bring your phone to a like-new state and that also means losing all of your data. You should backup your HTC U11 before attempting to solve the issue this way.

Conclusion

If none of the above solutions helped, you should contact HTC customer support to find out about your options. No matter what you decide on, make sure to back up your phone before sending it for repair. In many cases, you might get lucky and have the problem resolved under your existing warranty.
