iPhone 7 Sound Not Working – What to Do

Discovering a serious issue, such as no sound, on a device as valuable as an iPhone can be terrifying. Many such unfortunate owners would immediately think about the money that they’ll potentially have to spend on repairing the device and how much time they’ll have to go without it.

However, there’s no reason to panic if you can’t get your iPhone 7 to make any sound, as the underlying cause might not be serious at all. It can happen out of the blue due to a software glitch or any random inconsistency within iOS.

There are a few things that you can do, so check whether this is the case and potentially fix this problem on your own.

Check the Ring/Silent Switch

On the left side of your iPhone, you’ll see the Ring/Silent switch that iPhones are known for.

As you might or might not have imagined, many users have a habit of accidentally tripping the switch to Silent (the orange bar is visible), or they might’ve put the phone on silent and forgot to set it back. When this happens, your speakers are disengaged.

Make sure that the switch is set to Ring, then try playing any media and adjust the volume to see if there’s any sound. If not, there are other things that you can do.

Configure Settings within Control Center

On an iPhone 7/7+, you can bring up Control Center by swiping up from the bottom of the screen.

Once you do, check the following settings:

  1. Bluetooth – If Bluetooth is turned on, your device might have automatically connected to external speakers, so it’ll send all the sound to the external rather than the internal speakers. Disable Bluetooth and see whether something has changed.
  2. Do Not Disturb – The Do Not Disturb function disables incoming notifications. If it’s on, toggle it off by pressing the crescent moon icon and the sound should be back.
  3. Mute – Check the volume bar to see whether it’s set all the way down. If it is, swipe up to turn the volume up and this should resolve the issue.

Restart Your iPhone

This is one of the first things that you should do if there’s a software glitch. Rebooting the device might fix any inconsistencies and solve minor software-related issues.

To restart your iPhone:

  1. Hold the Power button on the right side until you see the red slider.
  2. Swipe the slider to the right and wait until the iPhone turns off.
  3. Wait for a few seconds then power it back up.
