iPhone XR – Forgot Pin Password – What to Do?

Forgetting your iPhone XR’s pin password is, while unpleasant, actually not that big of a problem. Though there are many ways to solve it, doing it via iTunes or iCloud is strongly advised. Read on for detailed guidelines on the best and safest methods to deal with the forgotten pin problem.

iPhone XR – Forgot Pin Password – What to Do?

Method 1: iTunes

While there’s a number of ways to unlock your iPhone XR, the iTunes method remains the safest and the most reliable one. This particular method works if you have synced your iPhone XR to iTunes prior to the password accident. Assuming that you have, here are the steps:

  1. Connect your iPhone XR to your PC/Mac.
  2. Launch iTunes on your computer. If iTunes asks for your password, please refer to the next method (iTunes with Recovery Mode). If not, proceed to the step 3.
  3. Wait for your PC to sync your iPhone XR to iTunes. If it doesn’t sync automatically, you will have to sync manually. You may need to consult the official sync guide on Apple’s website.
  4. Once the sync process is completed, click the “Restore iPhone…” button.
  5. Pick the “Restore from iTunes backup” option on your iPhone XR’s Set Up
  6. Set the new passcode.

Method 2: iTunes with Recovery Mode

In case you have never synced your iPhone XR with iTunes, you can still use the service to recover your password-locked phone. Bear in mind that this will erase all the data from your XR, as well as its passcode. With the warning out of the way, let’s see how to use the Recovery Mode.

  1. Connect your iPhone XR to your computer. If it doesn’t have the iTunes app installed, you should first download and install it.
  2. Connect your iPhone XR to the computer and launch the iTunes app.
  3. Force-restart the phone while it is connected. Quickly press the “Volume Up” button and release. Quickly press and release the “Volume Down” button. Press the “Power” button and hold it until the recovery mode screen appears.
  4. Next, you should see a pop-up window informing you that there is a problem with your “iPhone”. It will give you two options – “Restore” and “Update”. Choose “Restore”.
  5. Wait for iTunes to download the necessary software for your iPhone XR. In case the download isn’t completed in 15 minutes, your phone will exit the recovery mode. If that happens, go back to step 3 and repeat the process.
  6. When the process finishes, set up your XR.

Method 3: iCloud

Another way to solve this problem is via iCloud. You can only do it if you have enabled the “Find My iPhone” option and have previously synced your iPhone XR with iCloud. Here are the steps:

  1. Go to iCloud.
  2. Sign in with your Apple ID.
  3. Click the “Find My iPhone” option.
  4. Click the “All Devices” button.
  5. Pick your iPhone XR from the list.
  6. Pick the “Erase iPhone” option.
  7. When the process is done, set up your iPhone XR and restore the latest backup with Setup Assistant.

The Takeaway

iTunes and iCloud, while great multimedia apps, can also save the day if you forget your password. If you regularly sync your iPhone XR with either app, you will be able to recover your data, as well.
