Samsung Galaxy J5/J5 Prime – Device Is Charging Slow – What to Do

After extended use, you may notice that your smartphone needs a longer time to charge. Sometimes this has to do with the hardware showing signs of degradation, but it can also be due to software issues.

Here are some of the reasons why your Galaxy J5/J5 Prime may be charging slower than usual and some DIY fixes you can try.

Cleaning the Charging Port

This is an issue that often gets overlooked. Phone charging ports get debris stuck in them. This can be hair from your pets, dust, or other particles.

Keeping the charging port clean is a good way to maintain a high charging speed. Cotton swabs and toothpicks should work just fine if you don’t have a can of compressed air on hand.

Checking the Battery

Like all other hardware components, batteries degrade over time. There are a few signs that your battery might be having issues: swelling on the back of your phone, leaks, periodic restarts, and slow charging times.

If you want to inspect the hardware integrity of the battery, follow the next steps:

1. Turn off your phone
2. Locate the small notch on the upper-left part on the back of the phone
3. Remove the lid
4. Use the small notch under the battery to lift it and remove it

Changing the Charger

A faulty charger or charging cable is another potential reason why your J5 takes too long to recharge. Inspect the integrity of the cable. If you notice any damage, stop using the charger immediately.

Although there are many third-party adapters and cables to choose from, it’s best to stick to the model that your phone came with. Third-party chargers can heat up too fast and don’t have good transfer rates, which will lead to slow charging times.

Charging the Phone when Turned Off or in Safe Mode

This may seem like a no-brainer but not a lot of people bother to try. When your phone is turned on, the system apps and third-party apps constantly draw power as they run the background.

Turning off your phone may shorten the charging time considerably. But if you still need to be able to take calls while your phone is charging, consider switching to safe mode.

This way, all essential system apps will still run but it switches off non-essential third-party apps, such as games, dating apps, messaging apps, and so on.

Here’s how you can enter safe mode on Galaxy J5 phones:

1. Turn off your phone
2. Press and hold the Power and Volume Down keys
3. Release the Power key once the Samsung logo appears
4. Wait for the Safe Mode logo to appear in the bottom left corner of the screen
5. Release Volume Down key

If this doesn’t help, it’s possible that the slow charging time comes from a hardware issue. It could have something to do with the battery or other phone components, or perhaps your charger isn’t keeping up anymore.

A Final Thought

As a last-resort, you may also try to perform a factory reset. This is a big time-saver if you’re not sure what background apps are consuming too much memory and drawing too much power. But, keep in mind that a factory reset also deletes all personal data from your phone.
