Samsung Galaxy J5/J5 Prime – How to Block Text Messages
Unwanted text messages are very common nowadays. Your carrier will frequently inform you about new offers, the stores you shop at will send you updates on latest discounts, and random strangers will send you messages by accident. This all clogs up your inbox, making it incredibly difficult to sort through your messages and stay on top of your conversations.
The best way to clean up your phone inbox is to block all unwanted text messages. Here you will learn how to do it on your Samsung Galaxy J5 or J5 Prime.
Blocking Unwanted Messages
To block spam texts on your Samsung Galaxy J5 or J5 Prime, follow these steps:
Step 1 – Go to Messages Settings
From your Home screen, tap on the Messages icon to open the corresponding app. Now look for the More link in the upper right corner and tap on it. Select Settings from the drop-down menu that appears.
Step 2 – Go to Your Block List
Once you’ve entered the Messages Settings menu, tap on Block Messages. This will open up a new menu with three options: Block List, Blocked Phrases, and Blocked Messages. Each of them serves a different purpose:
- Block List allows you to block text messages from specific phone numbers.
- Blocked Phrases allows you to block all text messages that contain a certain phrase. For example, if you enter the words “discount” and “promotion”, all messages that contain one or both of those words will be prevented from reaching your inbox.
- Blocked Messages allows you to review and read all text messages that your Galaxy J5 or J5 Prime has blocked based on the criteria you set using one of the above options.
Tap on Block List to proceed to the next step.
Step 3 – Add a Number to the Block List
On the top of the Block List page, you will see a text field where you need to enter the number from which you no longer want to receive any text messages.
If you’ve recently received a spam message from this number, you don’t have to enter it manually. Just tap on the Inbox button, locate the unwanted message in your inbox, and then tap on it to stop receiving further messages from its recipient. Similarly, if you want to stop receiving messages from someone in your Contacts list, tap on the Contacts button, find their name, and then tap on it.
Whichever of these methods you opt to use, make sure to press the green “+” sign next to the number to confirm the block. As soon as you do this, the number you’ve just blocked should appear in the list below the text field and the buttons.
Removing Numbers from the Block List
If you’ve blocked a number by accident, you can easily unblock it. Follow the first two steps to enter your Block List and then swipe down the list until you find the number you want to unblock. When you do, simply tap on the red “-“ sign next to it to start receiving messages from this number again.
The Final Word
As explained above, the Samsung Galaxy J5/J5 Prime allows you to block text messages based on their sender and their content. If you need more advanced options, you might want to give a dedicated third-party app a try. But if even a text-blocking app isn’t enough to get rid of all unwanted messages, it might be best to reach out to your carrier and ask them to block these messages on their end.
