Xiaomi Redmi 5A – Forgot Pin Password – What to Do
Fingerprint and facial recognition technology has made it slightly more convenient to get into your phone. But if you are still using a pin or password method, getting locked out can be a pain.
There used to be a bunch of ways to get around a forgotten password. However, for better security, and more headache, Android and Xiaomi have done away with many of these methods. Keep reading to find out some methods that still may work.
ADB Method – Retain Your Data
Did you know that you can delete the password file on your phone? Before you get too excited, there are two requirements to be able to do this:
1 – Previously enabled USB debugging on your phone
2 – Previously allowed the computer you’re on to connect via ADB (Android Debugger Bridge)
If you meet the requirements above, follow these simple steps to remove the password file:
Step 1 – Connect Your Phone
First, connect your Xiaomi Redmi 5A to your computer via USB cable.
Step 2 – Open a Command Prompt
Next, go to your ADB installation directory and open a command prompt window. Type the following prompt in the window:
adb shell rm /data/system/gesture.key
Hit “Enter” after typing this in.
Step 3 – Reboot Your Device
Lastly, reboot your Xiaomi Redmi 5A device. The lock screen should be gone now, but it won’t stay gone forever. So before rebooting your phone again, reset your password, pattern, or PIN.
If you can do this method, you probably can’t do the next one.
Why? Because enabling ADB to work on your device requires you to unlock Bootlegger.
Factory Reset Method – Lose Your Data
This other method is a popular one if you forget your password. But doing it will erase all your data. Normally, this is when you would back up your phone data, but if you are locked out of your device that wouldn’t be possible.
If you routinely back up your phone, this may not be a problem and any loss of data may be minimal. But use at your discretion. Also, keep in mind that if you’ve unlocked Bootlegger on your phone, this method won’t work.
Step 1 – Power Off Device
First, long-press the power button and tap on the Power Off option.
Step 2 – Start Reformat Process
Next, press both the Volume Up and Power buttons simultaneously. Keep pressing them until you see the MI logo.
Step 3 – Wipe Device Data
When you see the Main Menu, use the Volume buttons to scroll to the “Wipe Data” option. And select it by pressing the Power button.
The device will ask you to select Wipe All Data and confirm again.
Remember, this is the point of no return. Your device is going to start reformatting back to factory settings and your data will be erased. The phone also gives you a warning about this. So if you’re unsure, don’t do it yet.
Step 4 – Reboot
Lastly, you should receive a message that your phone was wiped successfully.
When you do, go back to the Main Menu and select Reboot to restart your phone. It can take anywhere from 3 to 7 minutes for your phone to reboot completely.
When it is done, you should see the Set-Up screen for your device. Yes, it should look exactly the way it did when you first got your Redmi 5A.
Unfortunately, there is no “one sure method” to use on all devices. You may have to try them both. Or you can try a third-party unlock app.
However, you may want to be careful with trying third-party apps. Only download one if you’re sure that it isn’t a scam or malicious software. Or you may end up with more problems than being locked out of your phone.
