How To Block, Unblock, and Ban on Kik

Posted by Jamie on December 9, 2018

If you’re new to Kik or are researching it to see if it’s for you, you’re in the right place!

Kik is a mobile messaging app primarily used by younger smartphone users. It is username based, so there is no sharing of cell numbers or personal information, making it ideal for those who want to keep a little of themselves private, or not.

Kik is also a mini ecosystem with its own language, web browser, and internal apps. Sort of like a mini internet within an app. There are games, memes, videos, music and all sorts all accessible within Kik. Oh, and you can chat too.

The app is open to just about anyone, offers a semblance of anonymity and allows users to create usernames with just an email address. Like any social app, this opens the doors to scammers, lowlifes, and pure idiots. So as well as millions of cool people to chat to, you’re going to come across the usual trolls and people you want to avoid. It’s still the internet, after all, and it’s open to all sorts.

Fortunately, Kik makes avoiding those people easy, and that’s what we are going to cover here. How to block, unblock, and ban individuals and groups on Kik.

How to block someone on Kik

It is refreshingly simple to block someone on Kik. This will prevent them being able to contact you using the name you block.

  1. Tap the profile icon within the chat section of Kik.
  2. Select More and then Block NAME.
  3. Tap Block.

That person will no longer be able to bother you while using that username. If they’re particularly persistent or don’t have anything better to do with their time, there is nothing to stop them from continuing to hassle you with another identity, but then you can just repeat the process until they get the point or get bored.

How to unblock someone on Kik

If you blocked someone on Kik, it is quite straightforward to unblock them. So if you did it by mistake, you decide you’ve made your point, or they promise to behave next time, here’s how to give them a second chance.

  1. Tap the gear symbol in the top right of the Kik app.
  2. Select ‘Privacy’ and then ‘Block list’.
  3. Select the person you want to unblock and select ‘Unblock NAME’.

You should now both be able to chat as normal.

How to ban someone from a Kik group chat?

Group chatting is a powerful tool in Kik that is used a lot. You can create groups of up to 9 people at once and chat about whatever you like. The same tools available in individual chat sessions are also available in group chats, including banning. If you’re running a group chat in Kik and one person continually misbehaves, you can ban them from the group so the rest of you can chat in peace. You have to be a group Owner to be able to ban someone from a group, though. If you aren’t the owner, then hopefully the troll isn’t only annoying you. Or at the very least, hopefully you’re persuasive. Either way, here’s how banning someone works.

  1. Tap the Info icon in the top right corner of the Kik group chat.
  2. Tap the profile picture of the person you want to ban.
  3. Select Ban from Group.

You can also Remove from Group if you like–maybe you’re planning a surprise party or someone won’t stop making awful puns–but the person can be re-added by another member. If you ban them, they cannot be re-added by anyone but the group Owner.

How to unban someone from a Kik group chat?

If you banned someone for whatever reason and want to give them a second chance, here’s how to unban someone from a Kik group chat.

  1. Tap the Info icon in the top right corner of the Kik group chat.
  2. Tap More inside the Info screen.
  3. Tap View Members.
  4. Find the Banned list and tap the name of the person you want to unban.
  5. Tap Unban.

The person should now be able to rejoin the group chat. Hopefully they behave themselves this time around.

On the whole, Kik is a great social media app where you can meet millions of cool people. It is free, easy to use, works on most devices, and does exactly what you need it to do without sending you down half a dozen unintuitive paths. There is no reason not to like it, at least when you look at it in a vacuum. But social networks are full of idiots and people who think they can behave how they like with no repercussions. While there may not be much you can do about them, at least you can stop them from polluting your airspace.

At least now you know how to block, unblock, ban, and unban annoying people from individual and group chats. Considering Kik is aimed at a teenage audience, it is only right that these kind of tools exist, considering how many trolls teenagers already have to deal with just by going to school.

Have you had to ban people from contacting you through Kik? Have you had any bad experiences? Have you run into any trolls that you just need to tell the world about? Tell us about them below!
