How to Change the Ring Doorbell Battery

Ring Doorbell is a true innovation among doorbells. Not only does it work like an intercom, providing the user a means of audio communication with whoever is at the door, it also provides a live video feed using the smartphone/tablet app. This means that you can see what’s going on at your front door and talk to your visitors from anywhere, as long as you have an internet connection.

How to Change the Ring Doorbell Battery

The device is battery-powered. Therefore, knowing how to change the battery is an important aspect of using the Ring Doorbell device itself.

The Battery

As mentioned, Ring Doorbell is powered by a battery, located inside the device. The battery lasts for 6-12 months, according to the manufacturer, which is quite a long time. The battery life depends on how often the motion sensor is activated and how often you use this doorbell for video streaming and communicating. Six months is still pretty impressive, but what happens when this time passes? Do you have to get a new battery?

Fortunately, no, you don’t have to buy a new one. The 6,000mAh unit is rechargeable, with the whole recharging process taking only a few hours. Unfortunately, however, there’s no battery access from the Ring device’s outer shell, so you’re going to have to remove the faceplate to take out the battery. Naturally, the faceplate has intentionally been made to be sturdy and resilient. For that reason, here’s a whole tutorial on how to change the Ring battery.

Removing the Faceplate

As stated, in order to remove the battery, you’ll need to access the inner part of the Ring device. To do so, you’re going to need to remove the faceplate. Don’t be afraid. If you know what you’re doing, the whole process is very easy.

1. Remove the Security Screw

When you first unpacked your Ring Doorbell, you probably noticed a curious-looking screwdriver, with a star-shaped end. Well, the security screw is the first thing that you need to remove in order to take the faceplate off and this can only be done using the provided screwdriver. Obviously, this was done for security purposes, so don’t try and use third-party tools and methods to remove the screw, as you may only end up damaging it.

Simply insert the star-shaped end of the screwdriver into the screw and start turning it counterclockwise, until it’s loose. Note: the faceplate will still remain tightly in place, even when you take the screw out.

2. Remove the Faceplate

You don’t need any tools to remove the faceplate, once you’ve removed the security screw. That said, it may take some effort to remove the faceplate. This was, again, done on purpose, in order to make the Ring Doorbell device harder to steal or tamper with.

To remove the faceplate, put your thumbs on the bottom of the faceplate and the tips of your index and middle finger on the front plate. You’re going to use the thumbs to push the faceplate upwards while supporting it with your middle and index fingers. If you don’t provide good support, the cover may fall down and end up damaged.

Now, take one hand off the faceplate while still providing index and middle finger support with the other, grab the cover, and simply pull it away. If you’ve done everything correctly, it should come off smoothly.

Recharging/Changing the Battery

Once you’ve removed the faceplate, you’ll see the battery inside the device. Recharging/replacing the battery is also simple if you know what you’re doing.

1. Remove the Battery

Towards the top of the battery, you’ll see a black rectangular tab. In order to remove the battery, you’ll need to press this tab. Use your thumb and middle finger to slide the battery out, while using one of your index fingers to press the tab, in order to set the battery free.

2. Recharge the Battery

There should be a USB cable provided inside Ring Doorbell’s original packaging. Plug it into the battery like you would plug a charger into your phone and wait until the battery charges to 100%. This may take several hours, which is nothing compared to how long the battery actually lasts.

3. Slide the Battery Back In/Replace It

Once the battery is fully charged, slide it back into place by pushing it until you hear the mentioned black rectangular tab snap. Before putting the faceplate back on, try turning the device on to see if you’ve placed the battery correctly. If everything is working, proceed to the next step.

Replacing the Faceplate

When you’re done replacing the battery, it’s time to put the faceplate back on. The process is fairly simple and straightforward. Plus, you’ll be familiar with it, as you’ve already been through removing the plate.

1. Line It Up

First and foremost, take the faceplate and look for a plastic hook in the inner, upper part of the cover. Line the faceplate up so that the hook faces the hole. Hold the faceplate at a 45-degree angle.

2. Snap It into Place

From the previously outlined position, simply slide the cover back on and push it until you hear it snap. This means that you’ve successfully fastened it into place.

3. Replace the Screw

Take the security screw that you’ve removed earlier and screw it in, using the clockwise motion with the star-shaped screwdriver provided.

You‘re Done!

That’s it, you’ve successfully replaced the battery on your Ring Doorbell device. It wasn’t too complicated, was it?
