How to Fix ‘4504 message not found’ Errors in Android

Owners of Android smartphones who use their text messaging apps (that is to say, pretty much everybody) may have received an odd error message in their SMS app that reads “4504 Message Not Found”. These errors are surprisingly common, and seem especially prevalent on the Samsung S4 smartphone. However, they can pop up on any Android phone running SMS, regardless of cell phone carrier.

If you look at the 4504 message in your SMS application, you will see that it has an unknown sender. For that reason, sometimes people believe this to be a spam message, but that isn’t the case. There are basically two causes of this message: one, you have “Block Unknown Senders” turned on in your SMS app, which can occasionally cause a message from an unknown sender to appear as this “ghost” message. More commonly, the problem occurs when an SMS message gets hung up in transmission or a data packet doesn’t get properly transmitted from the provider to your phone.

Could these messages possibly be from numbers you have blocked on your phone from contacting you?

I received 18+ of these today in less than 4 hours. I find it hard to believe these are actual text messages coming into the phone which are simply not being received, since I usually don’t get that many text messages in this early in the day time frame. I think it is a system error. I tried the hard reboot, removing the battery, and removing/replacing the SIM card. None of these worked and I am not going to wipe my entire phone just for this. Bad job Samsung, most info on the web shows there’s no fix for this.

You misunderstood what was said, A message was in queue for your phone and your phone did not receive it, so the network retries until it gets thru.

The phone gives you the error message because the data packet from the carrier was incomplete. If the carrier tries again, and it is still incomplete, then you get the error message again. All the result of a single text message that is failing to get to you (from a legit source) perhaps hours or days earlier.

Once you phone finally gets the message, this problem goes away (until some day when you get another incomplete message or fragment) because the text message is acknowledged back to the carrier so the carrier can take it out of the message queue for your phone.
