Hulu Live Keeps Crashing – How to Fix

As an over-the-top (OTT) media service, Hulu allows you to watch live TV without having to get a cable or satellite subscription. It also has a library of thousands of movies and TV shows, though its live TV offering has appealed massively to consumers looking at alternative ways to watch TV.

Hulu Live Keeps Crashing - How to Fix

However, Hulu consumers often complain that the picture quality els suffers when watching live TV, which is not entirely unexpected. OTT services like Hulu Live adapt according to internet speeds available to them. So, if you were to get a Hulu Live connection with a less-than-optimum internet connection, the chances are that the picture quality will suffer.

Most Common Hulu Live Issues

Some of the most common issues Hulu Live users face is that a particular TV channel would freeze in the middle of a program, or buffer for a bit for a while before resuming the stream. As mentioned already, these issues are often caused by connection errors.

Hulu itself acknowledges that some of these problems may occur. Once we’ve made sure that our internet connection is not a problem, we’ll try some other fixes recommended by the app-makers.

How to Check Internet Speed

Checking the speed of your internet connection is easy. Hulu recommends that you have at least 8.0 Mbps download speeds for watching live TV on its platform, while this speed increases to 16.0 Mbps if you want to stream content in 4K.

There are quite a few online resources to check your internet speed online. If you’re using a desktop, Speedtest by Ookla is a great free resource to find out if your internet speed is at the required level.

If you’re using an Android device, you can download Speedtest from the Google Play Store. It’s also available on the App Store for iOS devices.

Other Diagnoses

Once you’ve established that your internet connection is not the problem, let’s look at some of the other issues you could be facing. If the Hulu Live app is freezing or fails to buffer, one of the first things you should do is restart the app.

To do this, exit Hulu and all other apps running in the background. If possible, restart your device as well and then try opening Hulu again. The chances are that this simple procedure will solve your problem, or you’d need to perform a power cycle.

Performing a Power Cycle

To perform a power cycle, close your Hulu app, the device it’s running on, and even the modem or router you use for your internet connection. Give these devices a few minutes, especially the router or modem, and try restarting Hulu on your device again.

In most scenarios, a power cycle does the trick. In case your Hulu Live app is still not working as expected, there could be other issues.

Checking App and System Updates

There’s a good chance that you might’ve failed to update your app. Or that your system hasn’t been updated for some time. If you’re not sure about your app updates, we’d recommend you check with the official Hulu website. Click here, and then check for Hulu updates depending on the device you use.

Roku users often face this problem, too. So we’d recommend them to cross-check all the updates meticulously.

Also, check for system updates while you’re at it. Sometimes apps won’t perform optimally if your operating software is outdated.

Clearing Cache and Data

Sometimes filled up cache and data can impede the ability of apps to function properly. You should clear your cache and data routinely. In case you haven’t done it for some time, we couldn’t recommend it more highly.

To clean your Hulu cache and data, launch your device and go to Settings. Then go to Applications and select the Hulu app. Either within the Hulu app panel or under another sub-category called Storage, you’ll find the options to Clear Cache and Clear Data.

For Apple devices, there’s no way to clear cache and data directly. You’ll need first to uninstall the Hulu app from your Apple device and then reinstall it.

If you’re using a web browser for Hulu, clear the cache and data under the settings option of your internet browser.
