How to Identify Which Roku Model You Own

For many, Roku is among the favorites when it comes to TV streaming.

The diverse content and simple setup make it a purchase that is hard to resist. Having access to more than 500,000 movies, TV shows, and other content means you’ll probably not get bored any time soon.

All you need is to create an account, set up your device, and, armed with the remote control, the fun begins.

But what if you want to use a special feature advertised on Roku’s website? You’re not sure if your model supports it. Furthermore, you’re not even sure which Roku model you have. Here’s how you can tell.

How Do I Find Out Which Roku Model I Have?

It was easy at first, but now that Roku has launched a bunch of models, it may get confusing. There are currently nine available versions, to be precise. So, how do you tell which model you have? They all look the same to you and their names are pretty similar as well.

The simplest way is, of course, to take a look at the model number. You may find it on the box your device came in, but it’s not a problem either if you no longer have the box. Fire up your Roku and TV and do the following:

1. Press the Home button on the remote.
2. Find Settings in the menu that appears.
3. Find System info and select it.
4. Open the About option.

Among other info, such as your IP address, the software version, your network name, and so on, you will find multiple pieces of information related to your Roku. There’s the model number, the serial number, and the Device ID. All of these will tell you with great precision which Roku model you have at home.

What Roku Models Are There Anyway?

Here’s a list of all the Roku models and their main features, starting with the cheapest.

Roku Express

If you’re not too demanding, this is probably the best fit for you. This Dolby Audio model connects to your TV via an HDMI cable. If you also install the app, it offers the option of voice search.

Roku Express +

This one has an extra feature: if you have an older TV that doesn’t have any HDMI inputs, you can use the regular A/V cable that comes with this Roku model.

Roku Premiere

This model also offers free channels and the standard Roku features, but it also includes a premium high-speed HDMI cable and streams in HD, 4K, and HDR. It’s capable of impressive resolution and colors.

Roku Ultra

The Roku Ultra comes with a microSD card, voice search capability, and an Ethernet connection. The package comes with a pair of cool earbuds too, so if you install the app, you can use the private listening option on your mobile phone without disturbing anyone.

Roku Streaming Stick

This pint-size model is like an HDMI stick that goes directly into your TV. If you have a Roku Stick, you can use voice search and the included Roku remote can control your TV, such as turning it on or off.

Roku Streaming Stick Plus

The plus model has all of the features of the regular Roku Stick, but it has better WiFi features and enhanced picture quality. The signal is very strong so it can be used anywhere in your home.

Roku Smart Soundbar

This is like a Roku player built into a soundbar. Besides adding Roku streaming to your TV, this Roku also adds high quality sound for a home theater experience.

How to Choose the Right Model for me?

You may feel overwhelmed with information and uncertain about which model is the right for you. Here are a couple of tips to help you decide.

1. Know how and when you’re going to use it. These questions can help you decide. Are you going to watch it alone or with family and or friends? Are you going to use it in one room only or wherever you may find yourself at home? Are you going to watch your shows at night when others are sleeping? The answers should point you in the direction of your ideal Roku model. Some of us want the best picture quality, some demand wider WiFi coverage, etc.
2. Know how often you’re going to use it. There should be a balance between how often you’re going to stream content on your Roku and how much you’re going to pay for it. If you’re only going to use it once in a while, a cheaper version may work well enough.
