Instagram Share to Facebook Stopped Working – How To Fix

Posted by Jamie on December 18, 2018

Ever since Facebook bought Instagram, the company has been tying the two together so they can support each other in many ways. One of the more useful ways is to be able to share Instagram images directly onto your Facebook page. In theory anyway. In reality, the option is still a little buggy several months after release. If you’re having problems with it, here are some things to try when Instagram share to Facebook stops working.

You have been able to link your Facebook and Instagram accounts for ages. Long before Facebook bought them. However, the system behind the scenes seems to have changed with the acquisition and the feature that used to work reliably now seems a little temperamental.

The problem can take two forms. The first tells you the image was shared successfully but never appears and the other just doesn’t do anything. The two symptoms seem to have the same fixes so any of the methods below should work regardless of which you are seeing.

Instagram shares not showing on Facebook

What should happen when you share from Instagram is you see a confirmation telling you ‘Your post was shared successfully’ and it appears on your Facebook page. As mentioned above, sometimes you see that message but nothing appears on Facebook and sometimes nothing happens at all and you don’t see the message.

Either way, here are some ways to fix it.

Log in and out again

The simplest and therefore the first thing to do is log in and out of both Instagram and Facebook. It can cure all kinds of problems with the apps individually but also the pairing between the two. Log out of each and then log in and see what happens.

Check the link between Facebook and Instagram

The ability to share depends on the link between the two platforms being intact. Lots of users have found that checking the link and sometimes, resetting it is enough to get Instagram shares to Facebook working again.

  1. Open the Instagram app on your device.
  2. Select the three dot menu icon in the top right.
  3. Select Settings and Linked Accounts.
  4. Select Facebook from the list and you should be taken to the Facebook app on your device. You may alternatively be asked to log into Facebook.

When you first see Facebook in the Linked Accounts list, it should be blue with a check mark beside it. If it isn’t, it should turn blue once you open the Facebook app or log in as in Step 4. If the status changes, you should now be able to share between Facebook and Instagram. Test it to find out.

If that doesn’t work, let us reset the link.

  1. Open the Instagram app on your device.
  2. Select the three dot menu icon in the top right.
  3. Select Settings and Linked Accounts.
  4. Select Facebook and then Unlink Account.
  5. Repeat the process but this time select Facebook and then Link Account.

After Step 5, you may have to allow Facebook to share once again but I didn’t during testing.

Check Facebook permissions

As well as permitting Instagram to share with Facebook, there are also Facebook permissions to consider. All apps you link to your Facebook account have to be allowed to share content on your page. Linking Instagram and Facebook usually takes care of this for you but it’s worth checking.

I find it easier to do this on a desktop.

  1. Go to your Facebook profile and log in.
  2. Select Settings and Apps and websites.
  3. Look in Active to see of Instagram is present.

If Instagram isn’t in Active apps, check Expired or Removed to see if it’s there. If it isn’t present anywhere, the link above didn’t work. Go back to check the link between Facebook and Instagram and repeat the entire process. Unlink within Instagram first and link it again. It might help to keep the above page open in Facebook so you can see if Instagram appears in Active.

Clear the app cache

The final thing to try is clearing the app cache on your phone. It can cause issues with apps that have nothing to do with the platforms themselves.

On Android:

  1. Select Settings and Apps.
  2. Select Instagram and Facebook individually.
  3. Select Storage and Clear Cache.

On iOS:

  1. Select Settings and General.
  2. Select iPhone Storage and select Facebook and Instagram individually.
  3. Select Delete App.
  4. Reinstall the app from the App Store.

Clearing the cache is the final fix I know of when Instagram Share to Facebook stops working. Got any other methods to fix it? Tell us about it below if you do!
