What’s your favorite instant messaging app? For young folks, teenagers especially, Kik is one of the top choices. It has an intuitive interface and a great choice of emojis and gifs. And the best part about it is that it can be completely anonymous.
You can choose to list your phone number, but you don’t have to. An email, password, and username will suffice. Kik can be great for group chats, meeting new people, and just having fun with your friends. But how do you know if your messages are going through?
What Does “S” Mean?
Every text messaging app that uses data or Wi-Fi operates on a similar principle. Your message is sent to a server, then it’s delivered to whomever you’re texting. Provided they’re also connected to the internet, the message will be received. So, what does that look like on Kik?
You open your Kik app, tap on your best friend’s username, and continue to write a mini-essay about how you woke up and realized you were out of coffee. Major catastrophe. You press send. Just above your message, you see a letter “S” kind of shape hovering about in the top left corner. And there’s a checkmark underneath it. Great, the message is sent to the Kik server.
Almost instantaneously, the “S” turns into “D”. Excellent, your message was delivered to your best friend’s Kik. But they haven’t opened the app yet and haven’t read it. A couple of minutes later, “D” turns into “R”. Your friend has read the message and is most likely typing a thoughtful response. So, the path from your Kik to your friend’s is S-D-R.
When “S” Is All You See
If you use Kik all the time, you’re used to messaging traffic. It can be busy and quick. But every once in a while, you could find yourself in a conundrum. You’ve sent a message to someone, but the checkmark remains stuck on “S”. What could this mean?
Most likely, the person you’re trying to reach doesn’t have their phone connected to the internet at the moment. It could be that the Wi-Fi is out of reach and their data plan is all gone. They could also have switched off because they’re working or sleeping. Or perhaps they’re driving or traveling and will be back online soon.
Kik Is Bugging
Kik, just like any other app, isn’t perfect. Occasionally, a glitch could cause a messaging stall. When this happens, your best course of action is to check on your friend using a different messaging app to see if you can reach them that way.
Or maybe you just haven’t updated Kik in a while. And for any app to work properly, it’s best to always have the latest update. You can go and check for updates in Google Play and Apple Store and proceed to update Kik if necessary. There’s a chance that will fix your stuck on “S” issues.
They Have Blocked You
It can be very uncomfortable to realize that someone has blocked you. Maybe you have deserved it, maybe not. People can be quick on the block button. You’ve sent someone a message and it’s persistently stuck on “S”. Now you’re starting to suspect that you’ve been blocked.
An easy way to verify this is to try adding that person to a group chat. If they have blocked you, that action won’t be possible. If you can add them to the group chat, but “S” is still hanging on, then it’s probably a matter of connectivity.
They’ve Deleted the App
There’s a chance that the person you’re trying to reach via Kik has deleted the app. They were using it until yesterday, sure. But today they woke up and decided they don’t need it anymore. Unless they’ve sent a special notification, you won’t know about it. Try reaching them in other ways for confirmation.
What If Your Message Is Stuck on “D”?
When the message you sent to someone on Kik is stuck on “D”, it means that it’s delivered but not yet read. You can rest easy – they’ll get to it eventually. The message went through the server and they were notified of it. If “D” is lingering there longer than you’ve anticipated, it probably means the person is busy or away from their phone.
What If Your Message Is Stuck on “R”?
Your message was sent, delivered, and the person has read the message. You can hardly call that “stuck”, but it does mean you’re stuck without a reply. At this point, Kik has done everything you could ask of it. The person you’ve messaged is choosing not to reply.
No One Likes to Be Stuck
If you’re stuck on “S” with Kik that sucks. But let’s face it, being stuck on “R” is worse. Well, if the reason for seeing the “S” is that someone has blocked you, that’s far more serious. In any case, the most common reasons for the infamous stuck “S” on Kik are a matter of inconvenience. Someone you’re texting is either offline or they’ve deleted the app.
