Do you have a few folders with documents and files in them that need locking, otherwise passwords? Windows 10 doesn’t have any options that add passwords to folders. However, there are a few third-party packages that enable you to lock folders. One of those is SecretFolder, which is a freeware utility for locking folders.
Click Free Download on this page to save SecretFolder’s setup to Windows. Run through that setup to add it to your software folder. When you first launch the program, the New password window in the snapshot below opens.
This is where you can set up a new password for the program. That’s a password for the software package not the folders. Enter a new password and type it again in the second text box to confirm it, and press the OK button to open the window in the snapshot below.
Now select some folders to lock by pressing the Add button. Choose a folder and click OK. Then it should be listed on the software’s window with Lock status. Consequently, the locked folder has effectively disappeared from File Explorer. As such, it can’t be effectively opened unless you unlock the folder.
To restore the folder in File Explorer, select it on the SecretFolder window and press the Unlock button. Now you can open the folder in File Explorer again. Alternatively, you could always select it and click the Remove button.
Click Preferences to alter the software’s password. Then press the Change password button. Enter a new password for the program in the text boxes.
Overall, SecretFolder is an effective package to lock folders with. With it you can now lock any number of folders until you need to open them. This program is also compatible with other Windows platforms from XP up.
