Why get unnecessary gifts from your friends and family? Why not allow them to buy you something that you need? Well, outright telling them isn’t appropriate. It also feels awkward. Well, Amazon has found a solution to this. The best part: as soon as someone buys you an item from your wish list, Amazon will deliver the gift to your doorstep as a surprise.
The Wish List is one of the best features on the most world’s popular eCommerce website. Here’s more about the functionality and how to make the most out of it.
Using the Amazon App
You probably do a lot of shopping via the Amazon Android/iOS app. Your friends and family do, too. So, how does the wish list work inside the app? Very similar to the browser version.
Before adding the items to a wish list, you first need to create it. To do this, download and install the Amazon app for iOS/Android. After the installation, run the app. On the Home page, swipe from the left and tap Your Lists. Then, navigate to the bottom and select the list type that you want to make.
Using the Browser
Here’s a more detailed explanation about creating Amazon lists. To create one in your browser, navigate to Account & List at the top of the Amazon’s Home page. Note that you’re going to have to sign in or create an account to do this.
Now, select Create a List. From the list menu (three dots), click Manage List. Using this menu, you can update your details. Once you’ve made the necessary changes, click Save to finish creating a list.
Now, go to any item that you want to add to the list and select Add to List under the Buy box.
Finding an Amazon Wish List
On the other hand, you might be the one purchasing the gift for someone else. Although you will receive push notifications on your phone and emails, you’ll want to be able to access your friend’s wish list and see what you can gift them.
First of all, your friend has to share the list with you to grant you access. When they share the list with you, go to and hover over the Accounts & Lists, located at the top of Amazon’s homepage. From the drop-down menu, select Wish List. Then, click Your Friends. You will then see the list of your friends who have shared their wishlists with you.
If your friend hasn’t shared their list with you, you can request access. You can compose and send them a custom message, or you can use the default one.
Finding a Registry
In addition to wish lists, Amazon uses something called Registries. There are two types of registries, the Amazon Wedding Registry and the Amazon Baby Registry. These are wish lists for weddings and baby showers, respectively.
These are, however, a bit easier to access. Just navigate to and hover over Accounts & Lists. However, this time, select Baby Registry or Wedding Registry from the drop-down menu. Then, type your friend’s full name and select Search. You’ll see a list before you. Be careful to choose the correct name as many people might share your friend’s name.
Purchasing an Item from a List or Registry
Choose a gift from the list/registry and click Add to Cart. Confirm by clicking Add to Cart in the next window, again. Then, select Proceed to Checkout.
Finish the checkout process as you would for any other item that you’ve bought on Amazon. If you want Amazon to ship the gift directly to your friend, select the address in question under Other addresses on checkout.
To add a personal message to the gift, go to Gifting Options, and write your thoughts down. This page also allows you to remove the price details from the receipt, which is very neat.
To finish the order, select Place your order. After that, you will get the order updates, and your friend will be pleasantly surprised in the end.
Once the order is complete, Amazon will remove the item from your friend’s list. That’s the best way to avoid duplicates. If you send your friend the same thing via regular Amazon purchase, the item will remain on the wish list.
Sending Gifts via Amazon
Using Amazon’s Wish List and Registry features is an excellent way to show appreciation to the people who matter to you. It also helps everyone avoid a lot of confusion, and it makes sure that your friend doesn’t receive duplicate gifts.
