Microsoft Announces Sales of Over 3 Million Xbox One Consoles in 2013
After reaching the 2 million mark in mid-December, Microsoft on Monday announced that its Xbox One console has now reached sales of 3 million units. Xbox chief Yusuf Mehdi made the announcement in a blog post at Xbox.com:
Together, we ushered in a new era of games and entertainment with Xbox One. Over 3 million Xbox One consoles were sold to consumers in 13 countries before the end of 2013. It’s been incredible to see Xbox One selling at a record-setting pace for Xbox, and we were honored to see Xbox One become the fastest-selling console in the U.S. during our launch month in November. Since our launch, demand for Xbox One has been strong, selling out throughout the holidays at most retailers worldwide. We are continuing to work hard to deliver additional consoles to retailers as fast as possible.
While Sony has yet to provide an update on official sales figures for the PS4, analyst firm Baird and Co. reported this weekend that Sony’s console slightly outpaced the Xbox One in U.S. holiday sales, making it likely that Sony is still ahead overall depending on sales performance in other countries (the last official figure was 2.1 million sold as of December 1st).
The PlayStation 4 kicked the console season off by launching in North America on November 15th, followed the next week by the Xbox One on the 22nd. Sony then completed its early rollout with an expanded launch in Europe and some Asian markets on November 29th.
