If you have a Motorola Moto Z or Moto Z Force smartphone, you may have experienced a problem where your Moto Z or Moto Z Force continually reboots itself repeatedly. This problem can be very frustrating and difficult to resolve. In this article, I will explain some of the possible causes of this rebooting issue and give you some suggestions on how to deal with the problem.
There are two basic possibilities, a hardware problem or a software problem. If the problem is in the hardware, then there isn’t anything that you can do about it as a user except take your Moto Z or Moto Z Force in for repair or replacement. If the problem is software, then it can be caused by a problem in the Android OS software, in the phone’s firmware, or in a third-party application that you’ve installed on your phone.
Problems with the firmware or the Android OS can be fixed with a factory reset. However, before you perform a factory reset, be sure to back up your data and applications. Performing a factory reset will cause you to lose all your installed apps and data.
If an application is responsible for the rebooting problem on your Moto Z or Moto Z Force, then booting your phone into Safe Mode will diagnose the problem and give you a chance to uninstall the troublesome app. In Safe Mode, your phone runs only the basic factory-installed apps, which should stop any problematic apps from giving you issues. To boot into Safe Mode, power off the Motorola Moto Z and Moto Z Force completely. Then keep the power on/off button pressed to reboot the smartphone. Once the screen is activated and displays the Motorola start logo, immediately hold the volume down button until the phone queries you for your PIN. At the bottom left you should now find a field with “Safe Mode“. Select that, and if your phone stops rebooting you know the issue is with a recently-installed app. Try uninstalling the apps you have recently loaded onto your phone and see if that resolves the problem when you aren’t in Safe Mode.
